Post subject:  Avril Lavigne continues to vex me
On the one hand, the obvious shallowness and insincerity of Lavigne's plastic, poseur-punk style and faux-rebel attitude infuriate me to no end, but on the other hand, I have to admit that I find her extremely attractive, and her songs have a fun energy to them (I'm actually a fan of pop) if you don't think about the lyrics too much.

Well, this video is about as pure a distillation of the former as you can get, but I got a real kick out of all the pop-culture references (particularly the Wonder Years voice-over), the comic book framing, the goofy humor with the lobster and the dog, and the over-the-top blasphemy of Avril Lavigne standing in for Slash.

I refuse to consider the projected attitudes and emotions of entertainers contain any real world validity. It's about as significant as a buxom actress flashing her underwear and endorsing a candidate.

Huh.

A long time ago, I heard Avril Lavigne play "Complicated" on acoustic guitar, live, when she was still like, 16 years old or so. She writes her own stuff, she plays guitar, she's a real musician.

She's just...I don't know. I blame it on the generation gap. She's simply not my type of music, and I could do without her style of...well, anything. But I think... she's good enough that every once in a while one of her songs get stuck in my head and I don't immediately scream for it to leave.

You really think the "Rebel punk pop princess" image is the problem? Did you complain about Billy Idol's "Rebel Punk Pop Prince?" I always loved me some Billy Idol back in the 80's. Now, a lot of music I liked in the 80's didn't have any longevity, and I can't stand it anymore. (I was aged 6-16 through the 80's, my musical tastes have changed.) But Billy's still on my playlist. ;)

I don't know much about Billy Idol's biography, but given the era, I'm guessing he probably lived the "sex, drugs, and rock & roll" lifestyle that went with his image. Avril Lavigne, by contrast, disdains drugs, explicitly eschews a public display of sexuality, practices yoga, eats healthy, etc., but then lays claim to a rebel pop-punk image because she swears, has some tattoos, and does most of her shopping at Hot Topic. That's what's so annoying to me. I've never had much respect for the sex/drugs/r&r thing, but it is what it is, and if you're going for the image but don't live the life, you're pretty much a poseur by definition.

For me, I don't care about the "image" that much. My opinion of Avril still hasn't recovered from her mispronunciation of David Bowie's name at the Grammy Awards. I mean, who doesn't know David Bowie in the music industry?

Billy Idol at least sold the image. Pink also does a decent job of selling the image, even though Punk'd showed she clearly is just as vulnerable and insecure as any other wo...... person.

In fact, most (if not all) bands are about selling an image that is a hyper-exaggeration of their actual selves or just completely an acted persona. Dexter Holland from the Offspring is a molecular biologist with published papers. Tom Araya from Slayer is a devout, faithful, and practicing Catholic.

It's all about selling the image you're portraying to the audience. For me, Avril can't sell the image.

While I know who she is, I'm proud to say I've never felt vexxed in the slightest by Avril Lavigne. I thought her girlfriend video was funny, that's about it.

When Avril Lavigne first started getting airplay in the U.S., it was clear her songs were targeted at people five to ten years younger than me.

She's cute, she can sing well, she can play a guitar reasonably well, and she writes all her own stuff. That's about all the more attention I've ever paid to her.

It seems pretty apparent that she's having fun, making a metric **** ton of money and more or less doing it on her own terms. I'm not really sure how you can do much more than that in the music business.

"good music" is so subjective as to be undefinable. I've listened to more of her music due to this thread and it's actually pretty solid pop rock IMHO.
