The Glade 4.0

Apparently Saoirse Ronan (the girl from Hanna) auditioned for some role in Star Wars Ep. VII. Since we know nothing whatsoever about the plot, she could just be auditioning for the role of Bantha-girl No. 7 in some random scene, but it got me thinking. What do you folks think about having a woman as the main character this time - e.g., Ronan playing the female version of Luke Skywalker (a young woman, powerful but unschooled in the ways of the Force, etc.)? Personally, I would love to see that, though I doubt it will happen. Anyway, thoughts?

She was excellent in Hannah. Personally I'm just excited about a non-lucas helmed Star Wars (also, Mr. Abrams has apologized for his overuse of lens flare in the recent Star Trek movie, so hopefully that won't be as much of an issue either).

Overuse of lens flare on lightsabers may actually enhance them even further. Hmmm.

Disney owns Star Wars, now. I don't see how this could NOT be what's happening. Disney needs to give girls their princess protagonists. New Star Wars will use new main characters. Primary character will be a Disney Princess. QED.

But at least Disney is beginning to be progressive. Brave had the first "princess" I've ever seen that was shown that 1. Getting a boyfriend/married will not solve everything. 2. There was no need to show her getting a love interest at all.

Sad thing is, society flipped out and assumed Disney was taking a stance one way or another on the character being a lesbian. Because, just like in real life, if a woman isn't married and popping out babies (or actively working towards that goal) then she must be a lesbian. Of course.

I hadn't heard that either. I only heard positive things about Brave. I am now sadder.

Nothing wrong with a female protagonist, but she A) doesn't need to be a "Disney Princess" and B) doesn't need to be about any social messages.

Female protagonist? No problem.

Just...no social messages or politics please. That's one element that weighed down the prequels.

Certified badass female protagonist in a sci fi

We knew the prequels would be about the Clone War, the end of the Republic, and the rise of the Empire. We knew Anakin was going to become Darth Vader. We knew that before the prequels were ever announced. The dialog wasn't written, but the plot was there for decades.

"You're either with me, or against me," is a pretty standard line for a face-heel turn. Padme's line about how freedom dies was something that was bound to come out in dialog. She was a senator, a central protagonist, and she just watched a totalitarian dictatorship installed. Did you expect her to just keep her mouth shut?

Time has not been kind to these sorts of criticisms. As years roll on, they look less like Lucas making a hackneyed political statement and more like certain elements of the movie hitting just a little too close to home. The truth butt-hurts, sometimes.

I mean, the prequels had their issues, but getting our panties twisted over Anakin saying, "You're either with me or against me," is like watching the Wizard of Oz and getting mad over, "I'll get you and your little dog, too," because you think it's criticizing the United States for bombing a country.

More like the political messages were never there in the first place. People just got tired of being told their favorite sci-fi franchise was a lecture on current events.

The Empire, man, it like totally represents U.S. government doing whatever it wants and getting into "wars" its congress never declares. And those Ewoks? They're, like, the vietcong symbolizing the power of guerrilla tactics over testicle flapping "superior" firepower of the U.S. government!

And the Force? That's straight up bible thumping from the religious right saying that Jesus is more powerful than any blaster, and that the path to Satan and hell is quick and easy. Oh and that the president of the U.S. is corrupt and evil and in bed with Lucifer.

And Chewbacca (and some say droids as well) symbolizes the struggles of the black man. He's forever in indentured servitude (which they say is self imposed) but he's never quite treated as an equal. And when it comes time to get paid (ie: medals at the end of ANH)? The white man makes more, since Chewbacca (and the droids) doesn't get any medals.

It's all right there, man.
