An interesting nugget about his acting method I learned from a Roger Rabbit documentary several years ago: He trained his eyes to focus/defocus on areas where there was nothing to focus on. As he mentioned, just looking in a direction isn't enough when pretending a cartoon character is there. That subconsciously others can tell you're not looking at something nearby but instead at some object in the far distance. It was more realistic if you could set your focal point in the correct place for an invisible cast member.

He had Parkinson's. That's really what killed him. The Pneumonia is just the most common way folks with Parkinson's die.
