Both, as ever. You can rail on Ke$ha or Justin Bieber, but let's not pretend that "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is unveiling some great secret of the universe. |

I usually hold a negative opinion of pop* music, but every once in a while something comes along that's hard not to enjoy. *I suppose "pop music" is going to mean something slightly different to each person, while technically popular music, is just about anything promoted by radio & the music biz. I usually think of it as Dance, teeny-bop, lite R&B, diet Country, etc. It is often devoid of distorted electric guitars and is mostly targeted at young girls. Exceptions apply, etc. |

Yes. As always, some gems will have longevity and eventually become classics. The rest... Well, Theodore Sturgeon was wise. |

I remember my daughter raving about her boy bands when she was a pre-teen. Later about some other pop singers grabbed her attention. Then hip-hop. Then punk. I went to Amdee for clues as to what to steer her towards and away from then. After a few years she was listening to opera. These days, she wishes I wouldn't remember her tastes before she was out of her teen years. She's 23 now, almost 24. I really don't know what she listens to these days. There is a market for pop music. There is demand and people make a lot of money filling it. Not everyone is at the same level of maturity. Not everyone has the same taste in music. I really don't worry about. I also don't listen to it if I can avoid it at all. |

Pop music has lots of levels. Most of it is fast food, instant gratification, consume consume. Some of it is awesome and subversive. I have very eclectic tastes and don't listen to a lot of pop, but I can get down with some of the Katy Perry/Gaga/Beyonce/Ke$ha power tracks in the right mood. The greatest contribution to pop music in a while might be Weird Al's new album. |
