Because it's been consistently impressive in its own right (and in an effort to put Batman v Superman behind us), I'm breaking this out into its own thread.

How does this entry in the DC Cinematic Murderverse manage to look so damn fun?

Still hate the Joker design (goddamn stupid tattoos), though Leto sounds good, at least.

I remain skeptical.

I fear we've already seen the best parts of the movie, but I'll go opening weekend anyway.

Ha -- I don't go opening weekend even for the ones I expect to be great. If I'm expecting it to suck, the prevailing reviews will have to sway me before I'll even make plans to see it in theater at all.

I haven't had a good feeling about this movie since day 1. The trailers haven't changed that.

I'm not particularly surprised. Based on the previews, I've been anticipating this would be a movie that either lived on successful Harley sex appeal, or died based on a short time to introduce and develop an ensemble of unknown C-list DC characters and feminist backlash against blatant Harley sex appeal. The plot and majority of the cast of characters sure as hell weren't going to carry it.

Same. I never had any interest in it.

Best case scenario for this was bombastic, lighthearted b-movie fun. Looks like a swing and a miss.

It's just damn near impossible to introduce 6 established characters plus villains plus various hangars-on, make us care, and then still have a movie left that feels like it accomplished anything. It can be done, but it doesn't get done often.

Edit: Don't worry guys, they've figured out a way to fix the internet! http://www.gamesradar.com/suicide-squad-fans-petition-to-shut-rotten-tomatoes-down-after-bad-reviews/

Warner Brothers needs whoever manages their DC properties to be tarred, feathered, and most importantly, replaced.

Fandom is getting surreal.

Suicide Squad fans are petitioning to shut down Rotten Tomatoes because of its bad rating. Despite the fact that RT is simply and aggregator, and is thus not responsible for the reviews that are panning it. And despite the vast majority, at the very least, of the signatories having, you know, not seen the movie to have any kind of rational opinion on the accuracy of the reviews.

/facepalm

Even more amusing, of course, is that up until February, Rotten Tomatoes was a sibling to DC, as a fellow subsidiary of Time Warner. And it's still linked to Time Warner, as TW got a big chunk of Fandango shares in the sale.

I saw the trailer and thought the actress playing Harley really sold her particular brand of crazy.

My favorite comment on that is "Attacking Rotten Tomatoes for bad reviews is like punching the air because someone farted".

The actual petition:
"We need this site to be shut down because It's Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like
1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016
2- Suicide Squad 2016

and that Affects people's opinion even if it's a really great movies"

Except... neither of those were a "really great movies". BVS was *terrible*.

Everyone discounts the critics when the critics pan something that they like, as if somehow a wide critical consensus is nonsense just because you liked it. Here's something most people forget - everybody likes things that aren't very good. Ever enjoy a McDonald's hamburger? I have. Let's face it, it's not a very good hamburger. That doesn't mean every once in a while you don't want some empty junk food and get yourself a Big Mac.

The critics are "movie snobs." They are looking for the best. Note, however, that the tomatometer is not rating "the best." The percentage rating on RT is "What percentage of critics liked this movie?" If a critic gives you 6/10, it's counts a full 100% on the tomatometer. If a critic gives a movie 5/10, it counts an empty 0% on the tomatometer.

So we get to Suicide Squad. What's going on here? 96 out of 136 reviews so far are at least somewhat negative. That's only 29% of reviewers so far who liked it. But drill down into the details (Which RT is happy to provide.) What's going on there? The average rating is a mediocre 4.8/10. So Suicide Squad shouldn't really win any Razzie awards (although with awards, you never know.) It's not being rated HORRIBLE, it's being rated as "Meh." If you look at any two reviews side by side, even a positive one beside a negative one, you won't find a wide difference in opinion between the two critics. There's one that rated it 3/5 stars (a positive review) who's review reads as almost identical to a 2.5/5 star review (a negative review.) The very wide consensus of Suicide Squad is that it simply doesn't impress anyone. It's not horrible, but it's certainly not good. (Based on reviews. I haven't seen it myself yet, and won't until it's out on video.)

This isn't an issue of "Well, it's not the type of movie critics like!" either. It's not an action comic book flick vs. artsy flick thing. Take a look at this:

Iron Man - 94%
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV) - 93%
Marvel's Jessica Jones (TV) - 93%
Marvel's The Avengers - 92%
Guardians of the Galaxy - 91%
Captain America: Civil War - 90%
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 89%
Marvel's Agent Carter (TV) - 87%
Marvel's Daredevil (TV) - 86%
Ant-Man - 81%
Captain America: The First Avenger - 80%
Iron Man 3 - 79%
Thor - 77%
Avengers: Age of Ultron - 75%
Iron Man 2 - 72%
The Incredible Hulk - 67%
Thor: The Dark World - 66%

So, the worst of the MCU movies still got a "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatos -- 2/3rds of the critics liked The Dark World. There's enough variation that they range from reviews that think they're revolutionary and amazing, to reviews that simply think they're good fun and worth watching, but nothing spectacular, but they are universally liked.

The DC Extended Universe is not getting the same type of consensus:

Man of Steel - 55% (average 6.2/10)
Suicide Squad - 29% (average 4.8/10)
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - 27% (average 4.9/10)

The critics are not saying these movies suck. (That's why i included the averages here.) They're saying "They just aren't all that good." And they're pretty consistent about saying so. And lots of people like those movies. That's fine. There's a reason McDonald's makes billions of dollars. It's not from their quality food.

The movie was fun. Once you get over the fact that Will Smith is just going to be Will Smith, it is fine. The boy did not care for the Joker. I was rather...didn't care either way. He was a dude, playing another dude.

Did he look at the camera with a "This is crazy, right?" look? Or a shrug? Something like this? Please say he did. And often. It would make me go from 0% interest in this movie to about a 15%.
