Is this part of some existing universe or is this an entirely new comedy Star Trek knock-off?

Looks like the latter.

Also, looks like fun. :)

But it's Fox. Life expectancy: 3 episodes if it's good.

This enters the McFarlane Caveat territory. It'll get 18 seasons, and be on WELL past any semblance of funny has been wrung out of the premise. ;)

Hey, it could also get Family Guy syndrome, where it's well written and edgy, then gets cancelled, then gets brought back and loses everything that ever made it good in the first place.

I went through the same Fox vs. McFarlane, fail/succeed thing in my head and wasn't sure what to expect. Hard to judge from that clip, for me. I was hoping for more laughs than what the trailer offered up.

True, and then you have to wonder, is that because they held the laughs back, so that the really funny parts would be in the show? Or, like so many other terrible comedies, was that literally every joke in the show cut together for the trailer?

So, what's the verdict?

Not as straight up comedy as I was expecting, but I like it.

It’s less Galaxy Quest and more Star Trek with some non sequitur humor thrown in. The social commentary was an unexpected element to add to the mix. (Society by upvote/downvote, thinly veiled transgender issues)

Ever since I heard the announcement that it was being made, I had a strong hunch. My hunch was that this show was MacFarlane's way of getting a Star Trek show back on the air without having to be Star Trek. MacFarlane loves him some Trek. And there's been a long lull. My hunch was also that he pitched the show as a comedy simply to get his foot in the door and a guarantee that it would be greenlit, but I was thinking that it would eventually end up being more serious. That the comedy would hit hard in the pilot and slowly be tuned down as the show went on (but likely not being phased out entirely). Just like how Boston Public was originally pitched as a comedy but it evolved into a more serious drama.

I didn't have a means of watching it, but I kept hearing things about it as the episodes aired that seemed to jive with my hunches. The biggest things I heard was that: "If you're looking for a gritty sci-fi show, watch Star Trek Discovery. If you're looking for Star Trek, watch The Orville." I liked Discovery, but it's definitely not your daddy's star trek. I didn't mind, as I like the darker, grittier, imperfect side of Trek.

But I was intrigued by The Orville. So I broke down and re-signed up for Hulu so I could watch it. And I was not disappointed. It's true, it definitely is more "Star Trek" than Discovery. And that's ok. I like both shows for what they are.

The social commentary was not completely surprising. MacFarlane likes to get in his jabs. But it was more subdued. And, even Star Trek had its fair share of social commentary. "What are drugs?" "Drugs are very bad Wesley. They make good people want to do bad things." "Then why do people take drugs?"

I look forward to season 2.
