Surprised no one had brought this up. I enjoyed the first two episodes, and have lots of questions that I can't find answers to (who is 'The Child'?). Anyone else watching? |

The Mandalorian is what the sequels should have been. Lucasfilm made a mistake by putting Evil back in charge of the galaxy in the sequels, and putting the protagonists in the plucky underdog resistance position again. It undid everything they accomplished in the OT. I feel about this the same way I feel about Alien 3, or the new Terminator movie. You have to respect the state of the world/galaxy created by the previous well-loved movie. The Republic should not have been weak enough to be dismantled by the destruction of its capital alone. Some new "First Order" should not have replaced the empire. The heroes should not -- once again -- be relegated to revolutionary guerrilla warfare. (This would bother me much more if the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels hadn't done the exact same thing, multiple times. But I digress.) The Mandalorian doesn't have a lot of exposition, and it doesn't need it. It's the Galaxy Far, Far Away we came to love 42 years ago. It's gritty, dirty, and clearly is only possible because of the events of the original trilogy. The chaos, the power vacuum, the feel of the galaxy is a result of the fall of The Empire. Rather than undo the results of a series that I loved, it revels in those events, it thrives in them, and makes them matter. The Mandalorian tells a new story rather than retreading the old, but it lives in a world clearly created by the old. So far, it's perfect. |

Haven't seen 2nd ep, but the ending of one with e possibility of a Star Wars Wolf and Cub intrigued me. I will sperg out and say that the carbonite thing in the movies was tested on Han because moving a Jedi prisoner that's conscious would be problematic. It wasn't a common means of holding prisoners. Also, SW can't get enough of the one-biome planets. But those are minor complaints. We'll see, I'm mostly uninterested in the SW universe at this point. |

And with Episode 3: The Sin - it just keeps getting better. Observation: Parts of this series feel vaguely like an RPG video game in their styling. You can almost hear the level up, see the Mandalorian walking around in his new Tier 3 set armor required for the next act. This ...doesn't feel like a problem, however. In fact, this TV show could be described as a video game movie without a video game, and it's the first one done RIGHT. |

Liked the first episode despite some utterly cheesy and awful lines. It had good Star Wars-y vibes with the eclectic cosmopolitan mix of alien species casually thrown around as extras without hogging the spotlight, the city looked great, and it was neat/fun to kind of push at the edges of Star Wars lore to "discover" how bounty hunting actually works (even if there are some bizarre plot/logic holes in the system), some lore about Mandalorians and their culture and traditions, etc. Watching IG-11 fight was vaguely comic but sensible and awesome. Second episode was.. underwhelming. Like, change the costumes out and CGI a different beast and it's not Star Wars at all. Some people praised that, but I found it.. uninspiring. The third episode, though. Delightful. More of that Mandalorian exploration, more of that city, more definition of what a post-OT galaxy is like... More, more, more. And intrinsically Star Wars in tone, character themes, and dressing. |
