Post subject:  So - 8 years late to the party (Donnie Darko)
Is it just me or is the plot an exercise in self-fulfilling paradox?

Spoiler:
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the movie but it seems to me that all of the "bad stuff" that never came to pass because Donnie stayed in bed that night wouldn't have happened if not for the influence of the "time traveler", not to mention the fact that he might not have gotten out of bed at all if not for Frank. I wasn't entirely clear on whether or not his night wanderings were a solidly established everynight occurrence so I'll admit it's possible he'd have escaped his fate with or without intervention but since the events which then transpired were directly and heavily influenced by his new "friend", I can't help but think that the tangent universe was kind of a sham.
Anyone care to shed some light on this from an angle I might've missed?

The events would have transpired anyway, but Frank was sent back to prevent the future from occurring.

I think the only real good to come from Frank going back in time was to expose Patrick Swayze's disturbing side.

Would they have, though? Remember, it was Frank who told Donnie to flood the school and burn down Jim Cunningham's house. Sure, he wasn't exactly stable before Frank showed up, but would things have gotten as bad without that influence?

I think...the director's cut of the movie basically holds your hand and explains everything, leaving no unanswered questions. I haven't seen that cut of the film, though. I enjoyed the movie, however...but, as is the case with all realistic time traveling movies/stories/whatever, unless everything is laid out and explained, most people will be left seriously wondering WTF happened.

Yeah, this was kind of the problem with the directors cut of that film. I saw the original in the theater and went for coffee afterwards with some friends. We all sat around discussing what the film was actually about for quite awhile. Unfortunately, a lot of the mystery was removed when they recut it, and I personally think it lost a little of the magic that made it so great in the first place.

Very true. Nobody should ever, ever watch the Director's Cut of this movie for their first viewing. The movie worked much better when the plot was a lot more mysterious and made you really think and interpret it in your own way.

That said, I liked Donnie Darko a HELL of a lot more than Butterfly Effect.

Oh, God yes.

Best part of watching this movie? My brother watching the guy drive on-screen in the IROC, and dismissively saying, "Child rapist."

I was torn, actually. Didn't know whether to get the original cut or the director's cut, and had no way of knowing what the difference would be. Looks like I kinda blew it. Oh well, my bad.

Well, just shooting from the hip, you would generally think that a directors cut was superior (as it was with the butterfly effect. I only saw the directors cut and commented at one point how it was a pretty good movie. My friends couldn't believe it. Then I understood when I saw the original crap theatrical cut.)

Basically, the lesson to take away is this. Don't ever buy anything without asking us first. :)

Thanks for the tip, I might have to rent the director's cut sometime. Having seen the "original crap theatrical cut" and not being terribly impressed by it and all.

Yeah, people shouldn't make original movies. It should have been Donnie Darko Meets The X-Men or some remake of a remake or G.I. Donnie Darko. I think ppl are too stupid to watch movies that don't have a cereal named after them or something.
