“Summer would be perfect to play an active, but she’s done that a lot,” he says. “I’d rather see her play someone who talks too much. The most fun I have is when I get somebody who’s good and comfortable at doing something, and then I make them do something else. Summer said to me, ‘I would like to play a normal girl before I die of extreme old age.’” ~ Joss Whedon

Keith Carradine is appearing this season as well. I liked him as "Wild Bill" Hickok on Deadwood.

You thought wrong! Against all odds, a Whedon show has been renewed! (I suspect witchcraft, but I'll take it!)

As I recounted on the now-dead BZ board, my path to obtaining my Canadian-ordered Blu-ray copy of Dollhouse: Season One has been fraught with peril and frustration. However, Amazon.ca is awesome; they refunded my full price for my troubles (Canadians are so nice!), and sent me out another copy, which arrived today (finally!).

When Phe gets home, we finally get to watch "Epitaph One," the much-ballyhooed "lost" thirteenth episode, and then we get to dive back into it with tonight's season two premiere. The original pilot is included on the set as well, and it's supposed to be far better than the pilot we were given ("Ghost"). I'm excited for both. Whee!

I was extremely disappointed with the beginning of Dollhouse; those first five episodes just showed little of the creative ingenuity I have come to expect of Whedon's work. But from episode six ("Man on the Street") on, it truly ramped up into the realm of great television, and early reviews say this sophomore season hits the ground running. I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Yup, my belief is that when the show started the idiot suits at the network had an insane amount of input that was really evident in the show. Mid season, when they relaxed their grip, the show all of a sudden took a wonderful turn and got awesome. It's funny how that works.

Apparently fox has publicly said that they will be leaving Whedon alone for the second season to run the show. Hooray!

I really figure Whedon expected the show to get canceled last year, so to make his fans happy went ahead and told the end of the story in Epitath one. Hopefully that doesn't cramp him too much going forward.

last nights episode was wrenching but I think we're really starting to see Echo emerge as a Hero (tm)

She's got a minimal role in the episode and yet ..
Spoiler:
Even when in doll state, she's actively manipulating the Dolls AND the Dollhouse staff trying to save them ALL. So few stories show us some glimpse of the transition to hero, but Dollhouse does that. I'm really loving what this show can do.

Indeed, last night's episode and the previous show are why I can't just let the damn thing go. I was frustrated with the continued lack of forward momentum this season, and then these two episodes show up...

Unfortunately, poor ratings have led to Fox yanking the show for all of November sweeps. It'll return in December with three weeks of two-hours blocks each, and the remaining three episodes will be aired...sometime after that. No one is really looking for it to get its back nine episodes picked up.

Even Whedon admitted (when the news broke that he was going to be directing an episode of Fox's Glee) that "No, this doesn't mean Dollhouse definitely won't get a back nine. Our numbers mean that! But I kid. Okay, we're not exactly saving all the good stuff for 14-22, but nobody's closed the door."

No surprise there, really. And now he can concentrate on Dr.H.2.

Hopefully he's learned his lesson and has no intentions of ever going back to network television (Fox or any of the others.) The only place to make a series with the type of intellectual appeal he writes for (which the masses will never appreciate) is cable television, or stand alone internet release.

Fox has agreed to let Whedon produce the final three episodes of the season. They only ordered 13 anyway. At least he can work toward some degree of closure.

Yes. It's not so much an agreement from Fox, as Fox told him they won't be ordering any more than the 13 episodes they had already contracted, and they have only filmed 10 or 11, giving him some time to end it.

I have to think Whedon must have been crazy to have chosen Fox for yet another show... I hope he approaches some cable channel for whatever his next TV project ends up being.

You would think that Sci-Fi would be all over that ****, considering how they've picked up some of his other stuff for reruns.

Interview with Whedon on the end of Dollhouse (which returns tonight for three weeks of two-hour blocks).

Interestingly, the series finale is titled "Epitaph Two: Return."

It sounds like he's going to give us something we can walk away from saited. So all in all it's hard to complain.

We got a second season against everyone's expectations and it just didn't fly well enough. It's hard to call "It's all fox's fault" on this one (at least for me).
