I went solo to this tonight and I thought it was very good. Worth a matinee if you're a tightwad like me, or an evening showing if not.

The twist at the end is pretty awesome, it's not over your head with the religiousity, The Hughes Brothers are always fantastic, and Mila Kunis is always welcome. :D

This is a fantastic movie regardless of how religious or non-religious you are. Denzel Washington delivers.

Nitefox and I just got back from seeing it....it was lovely!!! I very very very very much enjoyed the peaceful, thoughtful, subdued feeling we all had walking out of the theater.
Great movie. We will most definitely be buying this movie when it comes out on DVD.

Spoiler:
30 years after the world almost ends, Denzel's character has been walking west for a long time on a mission - to find a place where the last known copy of the bible can find a safe place. Mission from God. An unscrupulous small town dictator is trying to build his town and is looking for a copy of the bible so he can use the stirring words to motivate people to do his bidding. He wants Denzel's book. Denzel doesn't want him to have it. Denzel is an astounding fighter, big surprise, and fights to keep it. Mila Kunis is not a love interest, more like a companion he picks up during the movie. Some interesting twists and turns.

Post apocalyptal waste land wanderer goes up against corrupt small town management. Swearing, lots of violence, suggested sex.

Went to see this today, finally. Great movie! Denzel has some incredible moves, especially when you know the twist at the end. I really liked it alot. This is a movie you go see, then go out for snacks afterward and discuss it.

I thought the ending was a little stretched. The braille version of The Bible is so large (twenty volumes) that Denzel could have only been carrying around a few books of the Old Testament, at best.

I think an even better story would have been that Denzel was wandering the world, writing the book himself as God gave him the words. Some of the book could have been blank, because God hadn't given him the words yet. Then, on his deathbed, the final words of the Bible could have come to Denzel, and he could go in peace.

Still enjoyed the movie, just found that irksome.

That's where your suspension of disbelief fails? That the book should have been bigger? Not that a blind guy was out walking the deserted wasteland for 30 years, and can hyper-accurately shoot people from 30 yards with a pistol and survive multi-combatant melee fights?

I watched it a second time last night, and my original nitpick remains. Going forward, though, I really would like to know more about how the world got the way it is. Eli obviously knew what happened and what caused it, wish we could have seen into his head a little more.

I realize the movie wasn't about what happened, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to know.

My impression was nuclear war between countries, most likely along religious lines, such as the US and Iran or something.

Yeah, I figured nuclear war. I'm not sure how to put my questions into words right now. I guess I'm mostly curious about how many nukes it would take to turn the (presumably, because of no outside assistance) the whole world into a dust bowl.

Interestingly, I don't assume that the whole world is a dustbowl actually. Given the proximity to San Fran, and that greenery existed there, I simply assume that large portions of the US have been turned into dustbowls. Also, he kills the cat at the beginning in a forest, which would require water.

Meh, those trees could have been long-dead, and they were in the middle of a presumably nuclear winter. Another minor inconsistency, that's the only time you see ash or trees until the end of the movie.

I assumed the whole world was a dust bowl because everyone is uneducated, and no one knows about anything going on outside of their own towns. Made me think that they had never received any kind of aid, or even communication. I then figured everyone else must be going through the same thing.

Could be wrong, though. Still just begs for more explanation.
