I'm also becoming a fan of HDR photography which involves taking pictures at a wide range of dynamic ranges and combining them to create a more life-like luminance, or sometimes a T-Pain-Antares-Autotune exaggerated effect:

You've just reminded me of something.

There was a book of art I had about 20 years ago that I believe was destroyed along with all my D&D books by the not so subtle coaxing from my psycho religious parents at the time. It was called something like "Mythopoeken"(sp). It was all artwork from one person, some black and white but mostly color, all fantasy related, and most was claimed to be inspired by dreams. Absolutely beautiful stuff, although I haven't seen the book since then so maybe my impression today would be different. Still, I would love to have that book again.

I've been trying to distance myself from LOTR for the past several years. I think because I tend to subconsciously start disliking things that become popular in the mainstream. However, some of my favorite pieces of art are still from that genre.


The first is by the brothers Hildebrandt. It's my iconic vision of what a ranger should look like (and I based a halloween costume off of it).



The next few are from Ted Nasmith. I've never liked the way he draws people, but his landscapes always blew me away. They look even better in non-digital format.





And last, but certainly not least, my absolute favorite piece of art by MC Escher. This is the one piece of art I spent a decent chunk of money on a large print, and even larger chunk of money getting a very nice frame and matte-job done for it (brushed silver frame, black matte with silver inlay... looks very sharp).



Outside of that I am a big fan of original paintings. I would much rather have paintings done by amateur artists rather than prints of popular artists (the one above being an exception). There's something about actual oil on canvas that I enjoy. So I have a few that I've purchased at an amateur art show that I've enjoyed.

I am a sucker for light as a key element, I suppose.

It's kind of easy; you can get some freeware for digital cameras (I had it on a Canon before I dunked it and wrecked it) that automates it. And look up "Photomatix", a piece of software that you can use to blend the images. I've dabbled in it a bit.

And, sorry for the NSFW Frazetta site. Sure, they're boobies, but, it's Frazetta. I mean, 13-year olds dig on his stuff, how can it not be NSFW?!

Because what a 13 year old deems is work safe isn't the same as what a 50-something-year-old CEO worried about sexual harrassment lawsuits deems is work safe.

My friend was given an original Frazetta by our last CEO as a token of grattitude. He married a terrible woman and mother, and her hellspawn of children destroyed it. He is still upset to this day. Needless to say, they are divorced (not due to this incident).

This. You need to see her Masque of the Red Death webcomic, which is also being printed. Wow. And her college project on Elric. Sadly, the ex took the Elfquest stuff with him, and since DC distributes Warp Graphics' stuff now, it's pricey to get the latest reprints of the original quest, which may be now out of print. She recolored them in Photoshop the way she always intended them, as she was never satisfied with the prior printed versions. In my favorite, the Father Tree Press version, the colors were not very vibrant, but they were IMHO still gorgeous. In the Epic reprint from Marvel, they were too flat and OMG bright, and too many details were lost (like One-Eye's tear when he saw the Father Tree burning).
