Okay, decent story, some action, no real sexiness, okay ending, not unexpected.

Matinee, or wait for DVD/Cable/etc.

Unless seeing Bruce Willis beat up really turns you on.

Huh. I just read a comic called surrogates on 'iverse' om the iphone (http://www.iversecomics.com/) - really thought it was quite good, and only $99 an issue

You know, I truly felt that the trailer for Surrogates blew the entire film.

Wow.... that must be a heck of a comic. Is that drawn by Jesus?

Man, hoping there's a "." missing there. $.99, hopefully.

It looks like an interesting film, but the LA Times critic kinda panned it. Didn't even rate the kind of front-page of the section treatment that I assumed it would have, given the heavy marketing campaign.

Wife and I enjoyed it. Probably not one I am going to own. And yeah, the trailer does somewhat ruin it if you think about it too much. Mostly in the "They have yet to show a particular scene yet.... so that must mean...." sort of way.

LTTP, but watched it and actually quite enjoyed it.

Pacing was excellent, and it kinda made you think.

If you were offered that technology, would you take advantage of it? Could you quit any time you wanted to?

Reminded me a lot of the old 50s-60s science fiction stories (like something Bradbury would write).

Thumbs up from me.

Saw this on netflix and enjoyed it. Kinda laughed when people looked like hell when not using their surrogates, because it made me think of what I must have looked like after doing Plane of Air for epic quest drops after working a 12 hour night shift.

I have been thinking about watching this on Starz on Demand... mayhaps it is time to give it a shot.

It's worth a watch, DS.

And I think that it probably was a jab at online gaming/community groups, and how easily people can get absorbed into them, ignoring RL.

Really? I didn't take it that way at all, I thought it was simply them using it for the plot. Honestly, if people could walk around RL in avatars all day, everyone that used one would look like hell. :)

Yeah, I took it as people who use technology in general tend to start to lose a bit of their humanity. Cellphone texting, facebook, yadda yadda. I think Rodahn walked away from it as a "message about gamers" purely because he falls into that bracket. :D

Well, I just interpret it as the MMO parallel because they are so immersive, with the use of ideally designed avatars, like the movie was portraying. And of course we all know about MMO addiction (like people in the movie were about their surrogates).

MMOs aren't mainstream enough, WoW included, for this movie to intentionally be an allegory or otherwise target MMO players.

It does fit well, though... probably better than any other specific thing. MMOs are sort of at the forefront of this whole concept since you usually have an actual avatar and such. There's a lot of discussion to be had on this, even beyond the initial obvious aspects like having an avatar. I've come to realize I'm a lot more responsible, balanced, involved, and probably well-liked person in my various MMO guilds than I am irl, for example. Even on this forum I have a slightly unique version of me that isn't the same as RL or MMO guilds or whatever. :p

I do suppose the same can be said about different facets of real life as well, so perhaps the above insight isn't terribly relevant or shocking, but it doesn't necessarily detract from the truth of any online vs real life findings.

This is a movie based on a comic. I don't think you can judge the source materials motivations based on what's mainstream

Considering that the inspiration for the world was Internet addiction and online personas, maybe we can.

Wikipedia article on the comic wrote:
Venditti was inspired to write The Surrogates after reading about numerous individuals who lost their spouses or their jobs due to their addiction to the internet and their online personas. In an interview, he says: "It dawned on me that if you were somehow able to create a persona and send it out into the real world—where it could go to work for you, and run your errands, and so on—then you would never have to go back to being yourself

MMOs would seem to fit that bill nicely.

I thunk you just violently agreed with me ... Noggel was saying it couldn't be based on mmos as they're not mainstream enough ;)

Well..err...yeah, that :embarrassed: I read that quote and it would seem to me that the stereotype for Internet addiction/online personas would be people who play MMOs too much.
