Third-highest grossing opening weekend ever despite opening in November instead of the summer. What the **** is wrong with people?

Titanic...that is all I can tell you. Look at what the two have in common, see your answer.

The higher the chance a guy has of getting laid when taking a girl to a particular movie, the more money it will likely make. Again, see: Titanic.

Don't forget the "middle aged women in love with immortal high school boys" demographic. That force is strong with this one. When both a mother and daughter can both be into something cool and trendy together, cha-ching$$$.

I can understand this. All I heard about this weekend from my 13 year old daughter was 'Taylor lautner' and 'Justin Bieber'. Boy, is she in for a surprise when that kids balls drop. :D

The Twilight series, both book and movie, make me sad for so, so many reasons.

I hate them. I really, truly, deeply hate them.

Don't worry, Farsky. In another 10 years, we can hate whatever it is that completes the same cycle for Steampunk -- pithy, meaty deliciousness for the underground fans of the genre, to well-executed broad-geek appeal, to geek-saturation spilling over into the "nobody understands me" whiney subculture of the day, to watered-down lowest common denominator tween idol sewage for the mass market to "enjoy" and think they're trendy.

I can't decide if cyberpunk has followed this cycle yet (the Matrix makes me suspect that it may have.. perhaps Matrix + sequels represents multiple stages), but vampires definitely has now.

Heck, I'm pretty sure Steampunk is far enough along the cycle we may not have to wait 10 years...

Perhaps you've forgotten about Ann Rice? When Joss Whedon launched Buffy, he wasn't moving the cycle for vampires along to it's well-executed, broad geek appeal stage. Rather, he pulled it up from the smoldering wreckage of tween idol sewage where the Vampire Chronicles had left it. Twilight has just drug them back down again.

In honor of this momentous occasion, maybe I should go grab some books and run a Hunter game wherein the PCs are trying to kill sparkly vampires.

Does anyone still have the link that was posted a while back on all the reasons the twilight series is creepy/drek?

Its because the link contains some word that is filtered. If you look at the actual link, it shows up as:

...sigh

The worst part is that I have to admit to being sucked into the whole mess if only for a brief time. Thank god I was able to escape before the fangirls completely devoured my brain.

This kinda upsets me, though. Because the writer is completely aweful. In an interview she dissed on another writer, who happens to be a friend of mine, but it was low and would still have made her look spiteful and ignorant even if I didn't know the woman in question. (And yay for karma and King!) To say nothing of the way she treats her fans and says nothing about the way said fans act. Twi-fans actually tear apart stores during signings - breaking shelves and damaging books. And the woman says nothing about it.

And don't get me started on what those books are teaching the next generation of girls.
