Am I right to be saddened by this?

The Walking Dead has gotten terrific ratings for AMC and a quick renewal, as it heads into its season finale this weekend. But now comes word of a curious overhaul behind the scenes.

Deadline is reporting that executive producer Frank Darabont has let go of the show's entire writing staff, including his number 2, Charles H. Eglee (Dexter, The Shield). As Deadline notes, many shows have some writer changes in-between seasons, but it's unusual for such a major overhaul.

In addition, Deadline says they hear Darabont wants to go forward into Season 2 without a set writing staff, instead assigning all scripts he doesn't write himself to freelancers. Deadline points out that Darabont fully wrote two episodes of the first season (and co-wrote or re-wrote the others) and that two of the others were written by non-staff writers, including Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman. They also note that Darabont would be using the same model employed by Torchwood, which has several writers working on episodes for the upcoming re-launch on Starz (including Buffy's Jane Espenson), but no full time writing staff.

One hurdle for Darabont to do this however may come in the form of the Writer's Guild. Torchwood -- which just added another Buffy alum, Kelly Manners, as a producer -- is coproduced by the BBC, who got the okay from the Writer's Guild to continue with their UK template.

No, I'm bored with zombies.

Thank God, those retards were awful. How about if there is more than 1 zombie per episode in the zombie show? It was all about racism, spouse-abuse and inter-family conflict.

Get back to you know, fleeing the dead, trying to secure and take back some areas?

A comment I saw:

A bit misleading, since Darabont is the main writer in the show. Sure, he carries other duties, but being the main guy you cannot say the entire writing staff has been fired.

So by "all fired", this actually means everyone except the primary writer being fired.

I still haven't watched this. But from what I'm gathering from people talking about it is that the zombies don't even play that big of a role? What kind of crap is that?

Yay, cable?

I mean, I get the "12 episodes make a 'season', and we show a 'season' in the summer and one in the winter" thing, but yeah, this? WTF, mate?

One thing I do like about the 12 episode cable seasons is that things get to get axed more gracefully. When you've only got 12 episodes run at a time, it doesn't hurt to just ride it out and tell the show to turn the season finale into a series finale, instead of pulling the plug half-way through a 22 (God.. they used to be 26!) episode season where nobody was building towards any kind of climax that could be co-opted...

I wish we would adopt the Japanese tv schedule and never have reruns or four-month-long breaks.

Come on people. Zombie movies and shows aren't about the zombies, they never have been. Zombies are the ever-present danger, the blind masses, the idiot consumer. The real danger is other humans.

That final was pretty damn good. Only thing I can figure, the show cost so much, short, really short seasons are the only way to make it work.
