Premiered last night.

If you watched, what'd you think?

Excellent.

It's really just an updated version of Carl Sagan's excellent series in the 1980's. What's amazing is Sagan's original barely needs updating, but if you want to make it accessible to a modern audience, it needed to be done.

Interesting, I'd been reading a lot of people saying it paled against the original.

Tyson has more charisma than Sagan, but lacks his eloquence.

As for paling against the original, it's the same thing. (So far.) Oh, they changed an anecdote or two, but the information covered, even much of the dialogue, is the same.

The only difference really is how it looks.

We missed it on Sunday, and I didn't get to the DVR in time to record it, but it is available online for now at http://www.cosmosontv.com/

My wife and I really liked the first episode. It makes me wish I had seen the original series when it aired.

It's got me rewatching the original, too.

Carl Sagan was amazing.

Stunning. Absolutely wonderful, both literally and not. I think Sagan would be proud.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it kept drawing me into a subject and then glossing over it and moving on.

I think they should have extended the length of the series to several million years to cover everything in adequate depth.

You're commenting on the scope of a 13 episode series that has only aired two? Keep in mind that the focus of this series is children and the uneducated. Many of us aren't going to get much out of it in its entirety, but it's still great to watch.

I think, based on this comment...

...Arathain is declaring that the material they are trying to cover is of necessity going to be a bit shallow, because covering it all in the detail he'd like to see would take a very, very, very long time.

Loving this series with the family, excellent update. Let's hope it succeeds in creating a future generation of scientists.

I find myself missing Sagan more and more as the series goes on. Tyson just is missing something.

Tyson is missing gravitas.

Tyson is fantastic if you watch videos of him where he's speaking off the cuff and his passion for science comes through. He's not quite as good when he's speaking from a script and more dispassionate.

I'm aware of this. And indeed I am learning things - the details, not the big picture stuff - and that's what I find most fascinating. I wish they could focus on these, instead of the broader ideas, but understand why that would be problematic.

Maybe that's it. His real passion shows through--the veneer he puts on for the show isn't nearly as convincing.

Sagan had a passion for knowledge and truthseeking in all forms, beyond his own disciplines of astrophysics/astronomy.

If I were to venture a guess, I would say Tyson, while he appreciates knowledge and truthseeking in all forms, has his passion a bit more narrowly focused toward the stars.

I expect that later Cosmos episodes that focus more on astromony and the universe around us will show us a more giddy Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The second half or so of the fifth episode (Hiding in the Light) was legitimately fascinating. I had no idea electrons behaved that way.
