The Glade 4.0

Ever have a friend who just raves about something so much that you just want no part of it? I knew someone like this who was crazy about Pink Floyd. I never really even tried. But damn me if this isn't just frakkin awesome. It showed up on a Pandora station recently. Just cannot get enough now! It's great hammered. I can only imagine how awesome it is baked.

"Shine On's" two parts bookended the "Wish You Were Here" album, which was a tribute to Syd Barrett, who left the band due to mental illness and/or drug use (likely both).

Pink Floyd's are all 'concept' work. Many of the songs are amazing on their own, but are best experienced in the context of the entire albums. In fact, their original recording contract had verbiage in it insisting that song not be sold as singles in order to preserve the 'Artistic Integrity' of the albums. I'm not sure what the current status is, but at one point, you couldn't buy the individual songs on iTunes or Amazon MP3.

As great as "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall" are, I think "Dark Side of the Moon" is my favorite Pink Floyd album. And apparently I'm in good company, as the album spent seven hundred and fourty one consecutive weeks (14+ years) on the Billboard album charts.

The guitar solo, starting at about the 5 min mark, and going through to the end of the song, is one of my favorites pieces of guitar work ever. I love Gilmours' style and arrangements. Simple and clean, and amazing 'tone'. I gutted a nearly new Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster and replaced all of the guts with identical electronics to the setup Gilmour plays live with. The only difference is mine is "Cherry Burst" instead of the "Candy Red" he uses.



Of course it didn't help. I still suck, and the guitar spends most of its days tucked away safely in its case. :p

Hokanu: Don't forget to check out Animals. It's a great "stripped-down" album that came out between Wish You Were Here and The Wall.



I read an interview once wherein Gilmour was talking about how he often will record himself singing his ideas for solos while listening to a recording of the rest of the song. Then he will construct the solo from the best bits of his vocal noodling. I can't remember his exact comment but it was something about making the guitar lines more memorable if the are singable. I thought that was pretty neat.
