Fun movie. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.

It earned its R rating by cussing (Also getting mooned by an alien) so keep the kiddos away if you don't want them to get a more colorful vocabulary.

Opposing opinion: I didn't care for it. Too many inside Sci-Fi jokes that went over my head. I love all the actors in the film so I was really hoping for more but I bet it is a wet-dream for super Sci-Fi geeks.

Wow, the previews are not very good, but your review has suddenly made me really, really interested.

I am not a super sci-fi geek so take it with a grain of salt, but an example would be... they entered a country bar and some band was wailing on fiddles, banjos, harmonicas. The song they were playing? Star Wars' cantina-song.

I'm quite eager to go see this.

Then again I'll watch anything Simon Pegg does.

The Star Wars cantina scene IS a pretty obscure reference...

I think you missed the qualifier that I am not a sci-fi geek but I noticed that I caught that one while the rest of the theater was waiting for a fart-joke.

Heh, that reminds me of when my wife and I saw Chicken Run. We made the mistake of going to an early matinee down in Dallas. I think the median age in the theatre was like 5.

So consequently, my wife and I were the only ones laughing at all of the WWII movie references which are ALL over the film.

I almost fell out of my seat laughing when Ginger picked up a brussel sprout and stared throwing it at the walls when she was in "solitary" in the dumpster.

Saw this last night.

Epic funny if you can catch all the references.

LTTP - Finally caught this (it's out for rental), and really really enjoyed it. The marketing for this film was complete ****. They marketed it as the next "seth rogan from superbad plays an alien" gross out comedy, and it was the opposite. Honestly, it's the first time I've thought "why didn't they tone the language down and go for a pg-13, or PG?" (language was the only reason it was R. Also, smoking a joint, but I'm pretty sure I've seen that in a PG-13). It was a really good hearted, sweet film, and I think it would've had a much broader audience. Also, this thing is just a packed love letter with references. Jason Bateman's line after shooting the radio gave me a laugh. Hopefully it finds a new audience on DVD.

I don't consider Star Wars or Star Trek to be sci-fi.

I had extremely low expectations for this and finally got around to watching it - turned out to be a sweet funny flick. Yes there are lots of inside jokes for sci-fi fans but they didn't make or break the movie. Hot Fuzz is still the pinnacle of Simon Pegg films for me - looking forward to what he does next.

That's okay Wwen, I don't consider people who use the term sci-fi to be true science fiction fans.

Star Trek is, but Star Wars certainly isn't.

I haven't really read that much science fiction, aka sci-fi, but NOT Syfy. (ugh) :P

Ben Bova, some Heinlein, the 2001 series, and maybe a couple other books. Not sure if Dune counts, but that would be more obscure as far as references go.
