Woohoo! It's July, which means that Star Trek is now up on Netflix.

TOS and TNG are both up, and I think Voyager as well- DSN will come next month.

DS9 is coming in a month or so, haven't heard anything about the animated.

I'm mostly happy about TNG, honestly.

just checked. S1 of TOS isn't up yet.

It IS the updated version (including the MORE annoying theme song) but with the updated FX... the old girl looks good.

Awesome. The only trek series I bothered buying and collecting (I don't torrent on principle) was Deep Space 9. Mostly due to the fact that the trek seasons when they were first released were 100 bucks a pop. When it costs 700 dollars per series, no thanks.

Anyway, how did you know when netflix was going to release it for streaming? Is there some place where you can see what is coming out?

You can use InstantWatcher to get some estimates, but Netflix had announced the Star Trek series on their blog a while back. It was supposed to come out in April, then May, then they said the 1st of July.

Or, if you looked at the TNG series, it said "Streaming starting 7/1/11".

I mostly just knew from the blog announcement.

S1 of TOS is up now.

No office-mate for the next 2 weeks, Iphone with unlimited data, and a lot of boring hours of watching software install itself....hmmm.

Sweet. I always wanted to watch the episode that Information Society ripped "Pure Energy" from.

Rewatched "Balance of Terror" again last night. Most of the new effects blended in nicely and added to my enjoyment.

Was one of Amdee's favorite episodes. Not surprisingly, it's a good one...

Check out The Doomsday Machine. That one benefited from the re-do, I think. I've been watching the remastered ones on a local TV station here in SoCal. They show them in the original broadcast order, which is kind of neat.

Just watched it---thanks for the tip! The damaged Constellation looked fantastic. So many episodes, so little time (since the wife and I just started watching Firefly too).

Cool, glad you liked it. I might have to check out Balance of Terror, since the local station is at the end of the 3rd season right now, and there's not much there that attracts me (last night was Requiem for Methuselah. I lasted about 5 seconds, long enough to identify it).

Based on the pilot... It is amazing the show got picked up. The Cage was utter garbage.

You realize this was written in 1964 right?

Yeah, also realize, everything else on TV at the time was a western or sitcom. I actually commented to my wife as we were watching the Cage "Wow, when this first aired it must've blown people's minds." Also, the green girl scene was really racy for back then!

I donno. I just laugh at some of the costuming--nearly all the women wear skirts then that would be considered obscene by today's standards. Even the Romulan Commander in The Enterprise Incident has a uniform skirt that is butt-cheek length.

That was all Roddenberry's doing. Almost literally. He would personally adjust costumes and hairstyles to be more revealing.

And, keep in mind that The Cage was not picked up. NBC asked them to re-do it, and gave Roddenberry another shot. He came up with the second pilot episode, "Where No Man Has Gone Before." That gave us Kirk, and a slightly more violent Spock. Thankfully. Oh, and Sally Kellerman feeling very self-conscious in her pants.

It has it's ups and downs, and goes through a rocky start like all other Treks. Towards the end of Season 3 is when bullet is chambered. And beginning with Season 4 is when it goes off with a bang and continues to rocket upward.

DS9 polarizes Trek fans. Probably because it is the darkest of all the trek series and begins to question Roddenberry's ideal image of the future, and even of Starfleet. Many fans don't like that. Other fans, like myself, found it to be the most awesome series of the Treks because of it.

Don't get me wrong, by "darkest" I wouldn't get your expectations too high. It's still fairly light-hearted compared to what you'd find on Showtime and HBO series these days. But DS9 shows that there are many shades of grey to a seemingly black and white universe.
