Earlier today, my brother and I were discussing the fact that comedy sequels almost always suck, and we realized that we could only come up with a handful that were decent:

  • Army of Darkness
  • Christmas Vacation
  • Toy Story 2 & 3
  • Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (kind of a sequel to Clerks)
  • Austin Powers 2
  • Shrek 2
  • Clerks 2
  • Get Him to the Greek (kind of a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall)
  • Evan Almighty

Anything else you guys can think of?

I thought Wayne's World 2 was a worthy successor.

Is the metric "suck" or "suck compared to their predecessor?" I thought Ghostbusters 2 was pretty good, but the first one was fantastic.

I thought they never made a highlander 2
they made the original, then went straight to 3

And I thought the thread was about comedies.

I guess Highlander 2 qualifies, depending on your take.

Ghostbusters 2 is the only good comedy sequel I can bring to mind. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me was hilarious (aside from the poo-drinking) when I was younger, but I got the trilogy on Blu-ray a couple of months ago, and it hasn't aged very well. The original stands head and shoulders above it.

From the OP, I don't really consider Army of Darkness a comedy, nor the Toy Story series.

I wouldn't really call those sequels though. They are stand-alone movies in an established universe.

Clerks II is a sequel, though.
