I am basically a newbie at the stuff.

Throughout my youth I watched the things like:
Robotech
Star Blazers
Battle of the Planets
Vampire Hunter D
Fist of the North Star
and the Shogun Warriors (Demon Dragon of the Heavens Gaiking, Grendizer, Danguard Ace, Getter Robo G, Mazinger Z)

I have also seen every episode of Cowboy Bebop and loved it. I have been all the way through Gundam Wing (meh).

Recently I have been trying to get back into some anime and I have stumbled upon a badass series that you all have probably known about for years... Bleach

This show has been absolutely amazing. The depth of the story and complexity of the characters is phenominal.

I have also been told that if I like Bleach I would like Deathnote. What are some others that could be recommended?

Bleach turns into garbage as it goes on past the "Soul Society" arc. The manga is entering its final arc next week and thank god that train wreck is coming to an end.

Start watching Naruto. I've been following it for over a decade and I still start every Wednesday by reading the new translated chapter online.

Death Note is great but unfortunately the anime goes on past the manga's ending point and gets a little retarded afterwards.

Gurran Lagann was hilarious
Full Metal Alchemist was amazing
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood less so

I liked Brotherhood over the first series.

Me too. Both series were good, but Brotherhood was better.

Brotherhood remains true to the source manga and is a far better tale ...

I found FMA to be more emotionally appealing personally. I enjoyed Brotherhood but ironically I felt it sacraficed the bond of brotherhood the Elric's shared and pooh-poohed their prior experimentation.

...

Fairly certain you're remembering the series backwards then, because Brotherhood is the one that respects that bond and Edward's sacrifice.

This.

Brotherhood is miles ahead of the original series. The ending of the original was so WTF because that's what happens when you let the anime pass the manga and make up its own story. Same thing that ended up making Death Note not as good as it should have been.

Original Anime was always an adjacent story, per the mangaka's request.

End result was the same.

You may also like Darker than Black and D.Gray-man.

If you liked Robotech, you may want to look into Macross Frontier. However, since it's a Macross title, it's stuck in license hell, so you'd need to find the fansubs.

Darker than Black is rather amazing ...

Kaze No Stigma is also solid.

Souleater is pretty good until the last episode.

what about stuff like Gungrave?

I never saw Gungrave, so I can't help you there. Maybe Crimson or Sean has.

Gungrave is pretty **** cool. I forgot about it. I liked the anime so much back in the day that I ended up buying the PS2 game, which was also sweet.

Eden of the East is very good. It doesn't have as much action as your other titles though.

Eden of the East is fantastic. Also ...

Spice and Wolf is amazing.

Crest of the Stars
Heroic Age
Gurren Laggan (which was already suggested)
Lyrical Nanoha (I recommend this to EVERYONE)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (take the idea of a magical girl show, and twist to hell and make it dark)
Fate STAY/Night (OR) Fate/ZERO - both very good series, but ZERO is probably better...

I can do more if you say what type of live action movies you like to watch

Voltron?

My wife got me watching Full Metal Alchemist when we first started dating. I thought it was good.

Star Blazers is considered anime? I never even thought about it before, but I suppose that's true...

That was my FAVORITE show when I was a kid...

I still sing the lead in music sometimes...

2nded

Also High School of the Dead was really good if short.

Inu-Yasha was very good even if it inspired hoardes of drooling fangirls.
The Twelve Kingdoms was fantastic too.
Ergo Proxy was pretty good.
Trigun is a classic.
Elfen Lied was very well done.
Oh! Edo Rocket was hilarious.
Soul Eater was also hilarious.
Avatar was extremely good.

Crimson, pretty much any kinds of movies. Everything from Hostel to beauty and the beast. Except Battlefield Earth and Before Sunrise/Before Sunset.

I'm not much of an Anime fan, and I loved Avatar:TLB. (The cartoon, not the stupid MKS live-action movie.)
