Wow, I had no idea they were making this. I'm really looking forward to it.

Me too. Joel Schumacher did a great job (*gasp*) of ALW's Phantom of the Opera with Gerard Butler. (It's hard for me to give Schumacher credit for anything after his Batman movies, but they were more of an anomoly in his career than representative works.)

I eagerly look forward to seeing Les Mis on the movie screen. And with the superb job Hooper did on The King's Speech, I have high hopes.

Went to see the traveling show about 3 weeks back. We'll see. I knew Hugh Jackman & Anne Hathaway could sing (Jackman won a Tony for The Boy from Oz), however Hathaway is no Patti LuPone) Didn't know Crowe could sing. Javert has such powerful songs, I hope he's up to to the task.

Russell Crowe sings in his own band.

It's not a very good band, by all accounts, but I gather it's not because Crowe shatters eardrums.

Oh, thats right! I completely forgot about 30 Odd Feet of Grunts. (had to listen to them when my ex-wife was obsessing over Russell Crowe when Gladiator came out)

Lea Salonga did the best job of Fantine I've heard. With that said, Hathaway's version of I Dream a dream is already the most ... haunting. Hooper didn't get her to belt it out broadway-style. This one is a more visceral, emotional version. And people are already talking "Anne Hathaway wins an Oscar" based on this trailer alone.

That... looks awful. Be nice if they could have gotten a Fantine that could actually sing.

But eh, she dies early and isn't in it much so no big. I hope its not as much a travesty as the Phantom adaptation was. Cause damn... that was terrible.

You're...entirely wrong! On both counts. Hathaway's rendition in this trailer is haunting...I can't get it out of my head. I may end up liking her better than Lea Salonga in the role (simply because broadway singers often forget to act while they're singing...like they're too proud to let their voice crack in anguish while they sing a sad song.)

Gerard Butler was no Colm Wilkinson, but he was a very good Phantom (better than Michael Crawford), and Schumacher's movie adaptation was actually good enough to buy.

I still kick myself that I never saw Paul Stanley in his limited run as the Phantom at the Canon Theatre in Toronto.

the Gerard Butler version of Phantom seemed more like "Dude with a Bad Sunburn of the Opera"

that said I did not feel his singing was the flaw to the movie and I liked it overall.

Hauntingly bad. ;) I'm not a fan of this, and will likely end up not seeing it... even though Les Mis is my favorite Dramatic Opera Thingy.

ANd as far as Crawford and Butler? For shame. Crawford was the superior Phantom in all respects. The man can actually sing well. And as a man that's supposed to be enchanting people with his voice and teaching Christine how to sing... far more believable.

Wilkinson was ValJean. That's the role I know him for, and he's pretty epic.

Wilkinson played The Phantom in Toronto. Crawford played it in New York.

Wilkinson > Crawford. I did not like Crawford (probably because I heard Wilkinson first.)

(I also saw Wilkinson play Valjean.)

All I know is this indisputable fact: Philip Quast = Best Javert of All Time That Can Never Be Dethroned

I saw Colm as the Phantom. I was happy.

Patti LuPone can belt, but she kinda chews her vowels. I still like her for some things (Evita), but less this role.

Just got back from seeing it. i loved it. It was great. They definitely went the route of getting great actors, rather than great singers, but I think that was probably the right choice.

It was an interesting directoral choice.

The director could have had them sing it in a studio and dub it on afterward. But no, he wanted them to sing it as they acted. They sang it live, and they weren't allowed to stand their belting it out to the camera. He wanted no broadway or hollywood pollishing on the songs. As such, the singing is affected by every on-screen action. Their voices crack with every wince, they break with every sob, they waiver with every tremble. It lends a reality to it i've never seen in a musical before.

Russell Crowe (who I normally dislike) steals every scene he's in.

I heard there was no talking in it what so ever, only singing. Thus, I will never watch it.
