So, we're tragically not getting Guillermo del Toro's dream project, H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, due partially to del Toro's principled stance of not compromising either the budget or the 'R' rating and partially because Ridley Scott's Prometheus covered somewhat similar ground. Hope however, like the dreaded Cthulhu, however, shall never die.

Right now, however, we're getting a film called Pacific Rim. Here's the synopsis:

Quote:
“When legions of monstrous creatures known as Kaiju started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.”

Everything I've heard so far has pointed to the film being insanely awesome. Here's a Comic-Con teaser poster (spoilered for size), as well as a couple of promo images:

I'm very hopeful for this movie, so far it looks good.

Sounds pretty awesome, but I would really like another Hellboy movie.

Del Toro is ready to do it, but Ron Perlman's holding it up. Apparently having a lucrative regular gig anchoring your own television show (Sons of Anarchy) and not having to sit through eight hours a day of makeup to turn yourself into a big red demon dude is more attractive. Bah. :)

Although, he did reprise the role for this (awesomely sweet story incoming): http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-v ... boy-346196

I can understand that. It can't be easy...but he's just so awesome as Hellboy. Also, that's pretty awesome of him to do that for that child.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind more animated Hellboy movies, because those were great as well.

There was supposed to be a third that involved Lobster Johnson, but sales for the first two weren't high enough to get it greenlit. :(

That is unfortunate.

More suit shots for the pilots (not the Jaegers).

Holy **** that was EPIC. Literally, the meme #holyshit is now the case, even Charlie Day said that at the end. Lots of gigantic, and I mean HUGE, spectacular, dark, visually awesome monsters. Wow. I am impressed, beyond impressed, Guillermo you have me.

Looks cool but if they Cloverfield that **** and only show the monsters a few times in full-body shots, I'll be pissed. I want to see monsters and robots tearing **** up for 90% of the movie.

I don't think there's any danger of skimping on the titanic action. The trailer's not out 'til for another couple of weeks (and probably will be attached to The Hobbit). More will be revealed there.

The Pacific Rim trailer hits in under two hours. Unfortunately, at the time of impact, I'll be at a Christmas party. Argh, the anticipation!

Yeah, I was pretty jazzed at that trailer. Thanks for the screenie of the carrier, Lenas. I tried several times to freeze it to get a good look at it, but failed. It's beautiful.
