So with as much love as there is for Whedon, I can't believe we don't have a thread on this already.

Opening Today, Friday the 13th, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, written by the man himself (in collaboration with Drew Goddard).

Going to see it probably Sunday. Very very excited.

I rarely post entertainment threads here anymore, as my tastes don't seem to much line up with more the vocal here.

This forum is better when you post them.

I don't always agree with your taste (for example, I have never seen a Kubrick movie that I liked,) but generally, when I read a FarSky review, I get a very good idea of whether or not I will like what I see. Also, there is enough overlap in our tastes that much of what you like is among my personal favorites.

I think my overall taste in entertainment lines up more with Kaffis than you. But seeing as Kaffis and yourself often share a brain, that's saying something.

Cabin in the Woods is in a genre that I typically avoid like the plague. Its incredible reviews (92% on RT so far) and the fact that Whedon and Goddard wrote/produced/directed it is at odds with my desire to continue avoiding the genre. I'm seriously considering watching it.

I saw the TV add and dismissed it as another Stupid-Teens-Get-Killed-One-By-One movie.

I just got back from it.

Now I knew absolutely nothing about this movie a few days ago. In fact, a few days ago I was bouncing around the interwebs and went on Rotten Tomatoes - oh by the way don't worry I won't spoil anything - anyway, I saw that there was this upcoming movie called "The Cabin in the Woods" which had a 90-something percent and I thought 'hmm, let's see what that's about'. I read a couple short blurbs and learned that it was co-written by Joss Whedon and that it was a horror film with a twist, like Scream. Well that was good enough for me. Without overselling it, which I hate, it's a very fun film. The "twist", which I won't spoil, can actually be deduced part way through the film, and is pretty much revealed further in the film.

It is true that your taste in movies is typically more artsy-fartsy than us really up my alley. Your movie reviews are generally helpful for informing my decision of whether it's something I must see, or something I can stand to pass on. Not only that, but I normally don't hear about most movies unless it's through you.

It's really and truly best to go in with no foreknowledge. Seriously, just go in to watch it armed only with the knowledge that it's a stereotypical horror film about a group of kids who go a cabin in the woods, and bad things happen. This is one of the few times when a film can sneak up on you and surprise you, not necessarily with its plot (though it does, to an extent), but with its humor, its scope, its intelligence, and its imagination.

I read and enjoy your reviews, our taste in movies is similar enough for me to get a damned good idea of whether or not I will like a movie, and even if I will not like it; there is enough information to decide if it is worth seeing for the artistic value.

Now for my question: How gory is this movie? My daughter wants me to go with her to see this movie. I don't like horror movies though. Actually, what I don't like are gory movies, which is what horror movies have turned into. Those slice -n- dice movies where they pare down the protagonist to his birthday suit of ganglia and gristle; those are not for me.

I know this movie is more than just a horror movie. I just want to know how graphic it is.

In this case, the movie has a 9/10 on violence&gore, and a 10/10 on profanity. Both are broken down in detail on the website. The translation is, my children don't ever see this movie until they've moved out of my house.

Finally saw it last night. I loved this movie. Best thing I've seen in the theater in a long time.

Also, it's pretty graphic. It's not a torture-porn movie like Saw where they linger forever on the needle... slowly...going...in..., but it's definitely not shying away from some slash and smash action.

P.S. Good review Farsky. That's basically what I've been telling people since seeing it.

Thanks for the info on how graphic it is. And Talya, I do indeed love that site, but for me, not my daughter. She's old enough to get into any rated movie. She loves horror movies and loves the Saw franchise. I'm the one who can't deal with the gore.

I do not typically like horror movies. I loved this movie.

I should note that my aversion to horror as a genre isn't rooted in squeamishness. I just have no interest in scaring myself; I don't find it entertaining.

This movie, however, doesn't use scaring its audience as the delivery vector for its immensely high entertainment value. It does employ moderate gore (often performed off-screen) and jump moments to support the delivery of entertainment on other vectors, though.

So I guess what I'm saying is, I would recommend this movie to non-horror fans whose non-fandom isn't caused by the inability to handle fictional violence and blood.

I dislike horror movies in general. Similar to Kaffis, my dislike is in that I don't enjoy being startled by loud noises and bright flashes on the screen. To me, this does not make a good horror movie. And if fact depending on your watching environment, it may take away from it.

My general dislike for the Horror genre is similar to my dislike for 'shaky cam' action or adventure movies, or movies with fight scenes that are too dark to make out the details. To me these things are just failed attempts to hide bad choreography, or directing.
