So, I'm surrendering my geek card, as until this week I had never watched the Syfy reboot of one of my childhood favorites.

So, after deciding to take some time out of work to deal with my concussion, I decided it might be a good time to do some Netflix power-watching.

And let me just say, damn. This show is **** great.

Sorry I'm late to the party.

the acting and dialogue are phenomenal, as is the directing.

The plot arcs are frustrating though. They needed JMS or someone to show them how to write a story arc.

Don't buy into the 'plan' the cylons have. There isn't one. And when they start that "Final 5" and prophecy stuff... just understand that the writers were dropping plot hooks with NO idea where they would lead.

Simultaneously one of the best and most frustratingly bad series i've ever watched.

The problem was the writers created a mystery with no idea for how to solve it, they didn't expect it to last, and they had no plan for where to take the story when it became a big phenomenal hit. Is it worth watching? Yes. Just don't expect the story to have been satisfying in the end.

I loved it. Right up until...

Spoiler:
Starbuck came back from the dead and poofed in the final.

On second watch, it made a ton more sense and wasn't as infuriating.

See, I always thought the story issues were the result of the writer's strike.

seriously major spoiler
Spoiler:
the writers admitted they had no idea who the final five cylons were when they made it a plot point. those 5 just happened to survive, end up on the same ship. obviously the writers were going for a hand-of-god manipulation in events but that makes Starbuck a Deus Ex Machina of the worst sort.

and other abandoned plot points
Starbuck's prophecy, of leading them to their doom, (or was it end) --abandoned
The significance of the opera house and the various visions people had about it - revealed to make no sense for as little sense as they made of it
Gaius Baltar revealing that there are only 12 cylon models in the pilot -- abandoned
Boxley - abandoned
etc etc

I am glad to have watched the show once. It was a decent journey. But it's one of those shows that I will likely never watch again and the type that the more you think about afterwards, the more your realize it wasn't as good as you thought.

But, again, I am glad to have at least invested time watching it. Unlike Heroes.

I loved this show when I first started watching it.

It became unbearable towards the end though...

I'm already completely commited. If the show is good enough that it's conclusion draws this kind of ire, it's a must watch anyway.

No one cares when bad shows have shitty endings.

This is an interesting point.

I don't know that I would call the ending 'shitty'. I just didn't like it. Some people did.

It isn't just the ending, though I think you'd be hard pressed to find many people who liked it. It's the entire approach to the series that became evident as it continued -- it was a serial with a deep, continuing story arch, that the writers made up as they went along. They had NO idea where they were going with the story, so where it feels contrived and deus ex machina, they really were just pulling stuff rom their collective asses. It's actually incredible that it ended up as good as it was despite this clear lack of direction.

I'm still not sure what's better: great production values, effects, acting, and directing combined with TERRIBLE plot writing (BSG), or terrible production values, effects, acting and directing combined with INCREDIBLE plot writing (B5). And why can't we just combine the best points of both?

I was satisfied with the ending, but they did leave a bunch of stuff hanging that they set up and never panned out.

This, was very pleased with the outcome. Was glad they dropped some of the crap they dropped.

Both worth watching, anyway. And both so horribly frustrating near the end...
