There's a thousand excellent covers out there. What are your favorites? Why?

IMO, a cover should say something about the band - what are they about? Or what is the album about? It should catch your eye, obviously (they are trying to sell something), but some go beyond that.

One cover I keep coming back to is U2's best 1980-1990. It's a very simple image that really sums up the band during those years. Also, for me at least, it's somewhat of a haunting image. I've had dreams about that kid.

Iconic, impeccably designed, strong, mysterious, attractive, and simple.

(Runner-up goes to Wish You Were Here.)

I enjoy album art but I don't recall any that made me say out loud "That's cool" other than this one. Plus, this album pretty much symbolizes my entire high school experience.

Ironically this is probably the album that the average fan (other than myself) likes the least. Joe never played any material from it live in the decade and a half that I saw him. Though on his last live album in Paris, he did play the title track.

Edit: Apparently my image links didn't work.

Good choice, though I've never liked the wish you were here cover.

From a marketing perspective, Dark Side of the Moon was brilliant - it's one of the few images from a band you can just slap on a t-shirt with no text, and everyone knows what it is.

Actually, I had no exposure to Pink Floyd 'till I was in college, so I used to be very confused at how many people appreciated my awesome nerdy physics shirt.

Sounds like me and my Public Enemy shirt. I liked the design. No idea it was about a rap band or that it was meant to be a silhouette of a cop. But all the "gangstas" at my school gave me the thumbs up when I wore it.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to subvert this topic a little:

I kinda prefer minimalism when it comes to covers. Busy album covers bore me.

So the U2 and Pink Floyd covers earlier in the thread are awesome.

here's a couple more...

Those are probably my three favorite album covers in my CD collection, I think.

Just badass.
Image

One of the soundtracks of my childhood.
Image

Post-Waters Floyd is like CCR sans John Fogerty, but Storm Thorgerson kept doing great work.
Image

I don't particularly like it, but Zep's Houses of the Holy has always stuck in my mind. The strange, surrealist image, the bizarre color scheme...compelling is the best word I think I can come up with for it.
Image

Heh...notice how almost all of these were from a time before Photoshop. :)

Don't have an image handy but the nirvana cover for nevermind was fairly iconic

I was actually going to say Nevermind as well but I started to think about their other albums and I actually think In Utero was better if not as iconic as Nevermind.

Those were two that always stuck out to me.
