Trailer released.

Still not 100% sold on Mickey Rourke, nor the choice of Whiplash as a villain, but looks damn good.

Trailer is definitely awesome. Again Farskee, GOOMH, I'm not sure why we went with Whiplash instead of Crimson Dynamo or something.

And, as I told Khross earlier today, I want Iron Man 4 (Iron Man 3 is the Mandarin payoff, if you ask me) to coincide with Sony's Spider-Man license running out. That way, we can cast Malcolm MacDowell as Justin Hammer, and have him contract some Spidey villains, and introduce the Marvel Studios casting of Spider-Man as a cameo.

Iron Man v. Crimson Dynamo was only really scary during the Cold War. Same for Titanium Man.

Iron Man v. Ultimo would be too easily confused if/when they introduce Ultron.

Iron Man v. Stane was too short, but given the origin story and setup, it was a race against time.

Iron Man v. Whiplash is good, but a better one for #4 is:

Iron Man v. Extremis

Extremis was a 21st century Super Soldier Serum experiment that fell into the wrong hands.

It was actually given into the wrong hands to show that it worked but that could be ignored for the screenplay.

Extremis beats Iron Man but doesn't kill him. Iron Man uses Extremis reworked on himself. Iron Man beats Extremis.

Iron Man then realizes his old girlfriend and the Extremis creator helped foster the whole thing to keep funding and work on Extremis.

This ties Captain America/Avengers lore into the Iron Man universe in a way Nick Fury can not.

Iron Man vs. Extremis is indeed awesome. Extremis (and immediately prior) is where I really started digging Iron Man.

As for Crimson Dynamo being outdated with the end of the Cold War; I would agree, but the filmmakers don't seem to care, since they're attaching a bunch of Crimson Dynamo ties and references to the movie-backstory for Whiplash.

With the Avengers coming up, are we even going to see an Iron Man part 3? I would have guessed that they would just keep up with the Avengers sequels, rather than individual hero movies.

Downey's signed for one.

Robert Downey Jr is gonna be great! I just saw the trailer. So many great movies coming out. Robin Hood looks good too.

YAY! Rhodey was in the War Machine suit!

I am curious how that villain can actually have a reasonable battle with Iron Man. Yes, he looks pretty threatening to Tony Stark in a race car, but he can't fly, and he's unarmored. Ironman can blast him from a distance. And by the looks of those whips, they would simply cut through the Ironman suit if Tony got close enough to be threatened, which is no good either.

I will trust that Favreau has this covered somehow.

Yeah, I'm imagining (read: hoping) for a more philosophical threat to Tony Stark this time out...we covered "man-in-other-suit" pretty well in the first film. Thankfully, the narration from Whiplash seems to indicate that is the direction they'll take.

Hee. "Bootchers." Yes, Mickey, are you sure you don't have a problem with his "nuclear wessels" too?

Well, yes. But you still need a physical threat for the payoff. You still need action, or else the Iron Man suit doesn't matter. It ceases to be "Iron Man vs. Whiplash" and becomes "Tony Stark vs. Whiplash."

I'm really hoping Iron Man 3 actually merges with the new Hulk series en route to an Avengers film and we end up with an Iron Man vs. Hulk battle partway through the movie.

Iron Man vs The Hulk would be a very short fight and lead to a very dead Tony Stark unless they're going to give him the magic super-tech he has in the comics...

Hulkbuster armor. He's gone toe to toe before.

Author:  Talya [ Fri Dec 18, 2009 1:08 pm ]

I don't think "toe-to-toe" would be the way to show it, just the same. Ironman shouldn't stand there trading blows and survive, he'd have to use his wits and speed. And just as they've gotta tone down some of the ironman suit abilities from the extremes they reach in comics, Hulk is not going to be stupidly infinitely strong based on his "anger level" in movies either. Movies tend to do better if storywriters and directors at least pay lipservice to physics.

I was surfing the wikipedia page for the movie, and my dreams were crushed.

Justin Hammer is in this movie (good!) played by Sam Rockwell (who I like, but...), thus destroying my hope that we'd see Malcolm McDowell play such a role.

If you watch the trailer at the end they show him be chased, and along side War Machine you see them fighting about 10 robots, or guys in suits. I imagine there's more to fighting that guy than just his whips.
