I named a sage in SWTOR "Kera'Fyrm" in homage to the old 'unkillable' Everquest dragon. It results in some fun conversations in /general sometimes.

I started doing a little reading for nostalgia's sake, and came upon this link.

http://www.tesuji.org/old_news/kerafyrm ... sited.html

I knew there was some drama around the killing of the unkillable Dragon, but I either never knew, or had forgotten the details.

One of the details I had forgotten was that Fires of Heaven was apparently the first guild to actually release the Kerafyrm, but apparently the script didn't function properly, and the dragon never rampaged the server like it was supposed to. (I wonder if Sean was present/remembers any of these details?).

Anyway, I thought that was a fun read.

Now I guess I go re-read the Fansy stories for the hundredth time. They are always fun. :p~

I remember seeing a plan around to kill The Sleeper before that, which involved also using a truckload of clerics, but rather having them (and everyone else) in SkyShrine and... using Yelinak as their main tank. The healers would heal him while he and everyone else fought the sleeper. This was.. well, definitely pre-'03. I don't recall too many people thinking it was feasible but there was a small crowd insisting it would work.

Yes, it occurs to me that all of that transpired more than ten years ago now. :/

Yeah.. EQ is 14 years old this year. A real granddaddy as MMOs go.

And I've been playing EQ since December 26, 1999...I missed out on the Sleeper though, very sad about that. Every time I got into a guild that was raiding they would break up after a few weeks...never saw a lot of the EQ raid content because of it. /shrug

It's funny, I've been playing lately off and on, just running around with a Troll SK. Not sure why, but I ended up in Rathe Mountains for some reason, and saw Hasten Bootstrutter. Thought it would be a kick to try and get those Journeyman's Boots that I was never able to get ten years ago, so I go to the Ocean of Tears and start killing Cyclops.

Two months later (yeah, I don't play much, but I obsess with the best of them), I finally figure I'll give it up and just go and hit 50 and work on Run Speed I or whatever. One last time, I figure I'll go and pull as many as I can and waste the whole island ... After killing my first two, not really paying attention, I let my mercenary work on a couple more, and decide to loot one. Wasn't even really going to bother.

"You have looted A Ring of the Ancients."

Heh, in classic EQ fashion, (a) the thing I was hunting popped on literally my last attempt before giving up, and (b) I killed the thing I needed without even noticing. It was kind of anti-climactic.

I was on Rallos Zek and hung around for a couple of hours while some of the folks I knew were battling the Sleeper. It was an exciting moment. I wasn't geared or keyed to get in there, so I just listened. When it became obvious the players were going to win, the GMs pulled it and booted everyone from the tomb. The outrage was extremely intense and definitely NSF much of anything. Many players had lost a couple levels in their many deaths in that battle. One GM started telling people if they didn't shut up he was going to perma-ban them for exploiting the Tomb architecture. No one could figure out what he was talking about. 100s of complaints were filed. Wasn't exactly a good time.

Reading the accounts at that link, Sony apologized for despawning/resetting the encounter, and restored all of the lost experience.

The alleged reason for resetting the encounter was that an NPC in the zone was somehow affecting the fight in a way the developers hadn't expected. After the reset, this alleged bug was fixed, and the next attempt they let them finish it.

My only specific recollection being online on Veeshan when the rumors started going around, was that the Sleeper had been killed on Rallos Zek (which was hard enough to believe), and that he didn't drop anything.

If you were hard core enough to level up that high on RZ... Killing the Sleeper was enough of a reason to play cool.

I wasn't high enough level to participate in any of the shenanigans, but I do remember reading all about it and thinking how cool of an event this was.

Yeah, this was my sig for a while. Why repost a mildly humorous jpg a decade too late to be of significance? Because it's been sitting on my hosting provider doing nothing, and I finally can. That's why, dangit.
