I lack the requisite skills, but this sounds like a pretty cool idea:

EverQuest™ players are some of the most dedicated, emotionally invested players in any virtual world. For the first time, EverQuest players have the opportunity to create parts of our world by designing new in-game items.

Player Studio™ is a new program that invites (initially US-based) players to download sample geometry, learn how virtual items are constructed, and try designing items. You can try your hand at writing a creative name, item description, and rationale for how it fits into the ongoing narrative storyline.

Selected items will be offered for sale in the SOE Marketplace alongside items created by staff artists, priced in SOE’s Station Cash virtual currency. Revenue from the sale of these items will be shared back with the creative player.

The program is not yet officially running, but you can read up and even start creating items now. More information will be released at SOE Live 2012 in Las Vegas, NV.

I'm actually kind of surprised it's taken this long. Another Sony-published title, Pirates of the Burning Sea, has recruited fan community artists from the start to help model (to meticulously stringent standards, including working from actual period plans) in-game ship assets. Something like one ship in four from that game was modeled by fans.

Likewise, Valve has had their Team Fortress 2 community inventing and modelling weapons and items for around a year now.

Having fans do the work... Amazing.

I don't think its about having fans shoulder the burden of creation. The studious probably pay as much to manage to fan creation bit (or more, when you include creating the software they use). Its more about fans having a direct impact on their gaming world, and greater involvement. I like the idea, even if I won't ever do it.
