Just in case you didn't get the email, and have an old character whose name you want to protect, you might want to log in between now and the 12th.

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthre ... dit6921211

Quote:
Here are the exact rules for Character Name Renewal:

If you are a Free-to-Play player:
  • If your character is below level 10, and you have not played that character in the last 60 days, your character will be flagged for rename.
  • If your character is below level 30, and you have not played that character in the last 120 days, your character will be flagged for rename.
  • Characters level 30 and above will be unaffected.

If you are a Preferred Status player:
  • If your character is below level 10, and you have not played that character in the last 90 days, your character will be flagged for rename
  • If your character is below level 30, and you have not played that character in the last 180 days, your character will be flagged for rename.
  • Characters level 30 and above will be unaffected.

If you are or become a Subscriber:
  • You will be unaffected by this

As of right now this is a one time name renewal, so if you are unaffected on the 12th then you will not have to follow these rules unless we do a renewal again at a later date. Of course if we do that we will notify players of it so they can save their names.

This is anything but a ploy to get people to add slots to their account? They might have as well threatened to delete them. It would probably be more compelling.

From the perspective of someone who plays, and seeing the silly names people are having to use, especially after the server consolidations... I'm glad to see it, although I think they were a tad too forgiving on the rules...

At the Seattle Cantina Tour event, I suggested to Eric Musco (Lead CM) and Damion Schubert (Lead Designer) that they should create a character 'archive', and that any account inactive (not logged in at all) for 120 days should have all of their characters, regardless of level, moved off of the server and their names be made available for the general public to use. If a player comes back after that time they will get to rename them when they drag them out of the archive. The bonus would be, when you pull your character from the archive, you could chose any server you like, so you have the potential to re-join friends who may have moved.

Exceptions could be made (for Military being deployed, etc...) who request their accounts be preserved in advance.

The current effort is really aimed at name campers... people who made level one characters to save a name, and then never used them (i'm guessing there are a *lot* of those).

Wish WoW would do this.

So many level 1s holding names that haven't been logged in in quite some time.

So "Darth Garth Barthmarth" who hasn't logged in for a year will potentially be patrolling the starbase again?

(Ok, maybe I just made that name up... but I've definitely seen worse)

Well, bad names are a slightly different issue. The CS teams have said they are very forgiving with enforcing name standards in the game, because the Star Wars EU is full of 'interesting' names...

That said, I think all of the people who had variations of "Legolas" in EQ had kids who grew up to name their SWTOR characters some variation of "Revan".

I will say that in the SWTOR beta I saw a larger, bearded Sith named "Porkins." And I thought that was hilariously awesome.

I told a buddy who then stole the idea for his Bounty Hunter. :)

So...I loaded the game up to look at my characters and my level 50 is flagged for a rename? That's lame...meh.

It's not a huge deal, since I'm not likely to get back 'into' SWTOR. But it sure doesn't help my desire to play, having my old main already flagged for rename.

No, read the message again. Any character over level 30 isn't affected...

Any character that has been logged in recently is not affected...

If you had a character flagged for rename it was due to the server consolidations last year....

Edit:
Also, this is a future event (Nov 12)

Grouse and I are subbed back up for now, waiting for Star Citizen to release dogfighting.

This must be the case, because Farkas is definitely already flagged (along with several others of various levels). I blame Skyrim for using the name for an NPC. I never had conflicts or trouble using that name online before. ;)

I can't decide which characters to activate. Are Sentinels still the same? I remember being kinda frustrated with the way their combat was. It seemed like you had to be robotic with your skill rotations just to reach mediocre DPS.

Logged in, went to my characters that were flagged for rename, gave them the same name again with no problem.

Speaking of names.

I know there are a couple folks that still log on. If anyone see's a new character tagged for the guild, it is a RL buddy of mine that I talked into trying the game out.

Heh, I've had difficulty getting tagged for ORE.
