I just made a Consular called Wasd on Nigut Road. I should make a trooper, but I'm going to mess with this guy for a little bit.

Made an Operative on Nigut Road named Wessix. Anybody Imperial side who wants to look me up, go for it.

And Keslyn the Knight on Republic side.

Smuggler quest mini-rant
Spoiler:
I received a quest to retrieve some medicine stolen from the Republic army. I tracked down the thief, and it was a lady who had stolen it to give the medicine to refugees. Of course, she in turn had the medicine, so I had to kill some baddies to get the medicine back. At this point, I had the choice to return the medicine to the republic army or to the lady with the refugees. I chose to return the medicine to the republic army, since they were the rightful owners. I got dark side points for this. I can understand help out refugees, but the lady stole the medicine. It's not right to give it back to her. Perhaps this moral conundrum was explained in her dialog or in the quest log, but I was annoyed that I got dark side points for doing, in my opinion, the right thing.

I got a feedback dialog when I finished the quest, so I explained my problem with the light/dark choices for this particular quest.

At some point, before you actually turn in the medicine and complete the quest, you are warned (if you do the mouseover thing) which way your impending decision will shake out.

I try not to stress over every last alignment point. I actually kind of liked that one, because neither choice was a "kill puppies!" arbitrary or sadistic evil, which I get tired of.

It appears I was playing my Scoundrel all wrong - he's not really supposed to be a ranged fighter at all. He's supposed to be a melee combatant. With heals. He's ... a rogue healer o.O

First Impressions:

The Good:
The graphics are fairly good. Its an MMO, and BW is trying to keep it accessible to everyone on earth with an 8 year old computer and a 3dFX graphic card. Framerates were pretty good, and lag was fairly nonexistent.

I played tonight as a Trooper, and I was delighted to hear femShep as my character's voice. Ahh Jennifer Hale. My favorite unrepentant puppy murderer. (More on that in a minute)

Actual dialogue choices? In an MMO? Nifty! I like the idea of playing Saintly or UPM... feels KOTOR/MEish. I like that.

The first group mission (Flashpoint) thingy. Ran through with Dal, Kaf, and Rane and had a blast. Well paced, and good to hang out with some good players.

The audio. Not intrusive and ambient. And Star-Warsy. Very well done. The voice acting, while IMO there's too much of it, and other aspects of the game suffer, it is pretty high quality work.

The Not So Good:
Every single quest is voiced. Even the insignificant ones. I found myself hitting the spacebar more than a few times to get through them. This is just personal preference, and the "bonus quests" of "Kill X separatists" pretty much just happen. So this is more of a nitpick really.

So I picked Trooper. I get the choice between tank or heals. Forever. This is bad. I don't know if they're planning a dual spec later, or if I get one later... but pigeonholing people is not a good thing anymore. I'm far too used to the flexibility that Rift and hell, even WoW provide to be happy with this lack of mechanic in an MMO anymore. Even within AC, I only get one spec, so I can't have a healy focused spec for missions and a solo oriented spec for all other times. This just barely misses the inexcusable heading. But only just.

Bioware has a problem. Good is *good* and bad is... well, you're an unrepentant puppy murderer. In the flashpoint mission:
Spoiler:
You're talking to the chief engineer guy about how to get to the bridge, or whereever we had to go. Its fuzzy now. His underling dude says "Oh, we can just vent engineering to space. That should release the security protocols!" The chief guy says "Well, yeah, but we'd all die in here too." We got the option then to A. Vent the eng section and continue mission... or B. do this other thing that the chief came up with. I selected A, and I won the "roll" for thing that happens.
Hence Dal's line about "DAMMIT FYS!!!"

Heals. I dunno if I'm supposed to be a single target, a support or an aoe healer... but I got "Medical Drone" or whatever at 10. Its bad. 2.5 sec cast for 300ish HP. Healing my Jedi friends in The Ellessellessses almost seemed pointless. Fast cast = small heal, slow cast = larger heal. Looking ahead, I get rank 2 of medical drone that does 450ish at 13. Then, at 16 I get Advanced medical drone with a 12 sec c/d that heals... 300ish. Ok, maybe that's instant... no, that's a 2sec cast too. /boggle

That brings me to C/Ds. The game has a 1.5sec GCD. And no auto attack. Combat felt... I dunno, nonresponsive. There's a queue setting that you can use that can be adjusted to 1sec... /boggle. Ok, fine, I can get used to the 1.5sec GCD. Why are there lengthy C/Ds on my combat skills? I have a conditional attack that I can use to shoot someone for pretty good damage that's on fire, or knocked down. That's cool. I like that. Its on a 15 second c/d. Wait... what? I have a rapid fire channeled ability that does decent damage. Its on a 15sec c/d. I got a cool AoE attack that shoots balls of fiery death with a 3sec cast time... on an 60sec C/D. Maybe there's something I'm not getting. It lacks fluidity. Most of the time, it feels like all the good stuff is on C/D. :(

The Inexcusable:
The UI. Oh. My. God. The UI is an absolute horror. The only movable element is the chat window. The minimap is stuck in the lower right, and the group interface is stuck in the lower left. Quests drop down from the upper right, and the upper left is... I don't think there's anything up there. Furthermore, the UI DOES NOT SCALE. This, IMO is particularly inexcusable. I don't need hugeass buttons taking up my precious screen real estate, I want to be able to size them down to something more reasonable. I want my minimap in the upper right, character info upper left, group dropping down from there, chat windows on either side of the button bar. Not being able to do this in a AAA title in 2011 after how many years of development? Inexcusable. This is going to make healing more difficult than it needs to be. Auto target doesn't work reliably, and there is no macro support built into the game as yet. Yeah, beta is beta, but this is just a stress test. The game, for all intents and purposes is shipping in three weeks.
Spoilered for huge image.
Spoiler:

I suppose its good that the only things I have a major ***** about are the UI and C/Ds. Overall, I did have fun, and hopefully they'll improve on things. Its not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but its good enough I suppose. It'll be fun to play as long as there are people to play with.

Heh, just embrace your inner unrepentant puppy murderer.

Spoiler:
I threatened the kid to get her to tell me where the meds were. ;) However, you're right in that dark points shouldn't be awarded for returning the meds to the proper authorities.

The other thing the chief came up with means we get to fight three mobs of critters and have to use three items. It is definitely longer.

Also, once I figured out which portrait window (I can't see actual portraits, frustratingly) was which, I could tell when Something Jerkish was about to be said when the second one wins the roll.

That was actually entertaining. You and Rane were the good guys, Kaf was 50/50, and I was the aforementioned UPM.

I could see the NPCs talking... "Why do you hang out with her?! My god..."
"Yeah... she's our heals.."
0.o

In other news..
Shut UP, Corso!

My companion can no longer use the gun I gave him... because I'm a bastard. How does *that* work?

Wait, what? On the companion? Is it a color crystal thing? You can swap that out with a DS-compatible one, if that's what the hang-up is. It's a side-effect of alignment-restricting lightsaber colors, unfortunately. I'm crossing my fingers they work out a way to restrict it for sabers, but not guns.

As far as healing goes, the one you've got is your big heal, and it scales up with stats and stuff. I certainly noticed when they were hitting, if it makes you feel better.

I thought advanced probe was a 1.5 second cast? That makes it a faster heal, but I think it's smaller, too. Patch healing, really, which is why it's on a cooldown.

Looking at the skill tree for my own commando, I suspect the feel of healing changes some when you get Support Cell and Trauma Probe.

Oh, and wow. Like I said last night, I didn't get a chance to do a proper Flashpoint in October. That thing kicks every dungeon in Rift's *** up and down the internet for memorability, even though we weren't specialized enough yet to really be filling roles (Commando aside, since Fys at least had one heal; none of us had any proper tanking tools at 10, so we were pretty much restricted to zerg tactics). I mean, I've played through Rift's dungeons several times each, and I probably couldn't tell you what was supposed to be happening in them an hour after running it. And even if I could, it sure wouldn't have been interesting, lol.

Has anyone yet made real sense out of the racials?
I tried the Cyborg, and it seemed the "Critical Eye" was only usable on friendly units and all it ever told me was that the unit was "feeling vulnerable".
I also tried the Mirialan and their meditation-like ability seems to mimic the rest ability, which makes it pretty pointless.
And ... Twi-lek get to dance. Whoop?

Are all of the racials purely cosmetic, have they just not been properly coded in, or am I missing something?

The racial abilities are cosmetic 'AoE emotes', more or less. The human one makes everyone around you go 'Huzzah!' and fist pump.

At least they've made improvements on the "you're in a queue" display:

previous beta weekend:
Spoiler:

today:
Spoiler:

It'd be nice, however, if I could scroll through the servers to see my estimated time without having to exit out of the queue.
