Forgot to mention one other thing that really, really impressed me about this game. Specifically, as a sith warrior.

As a level 1 grunt, the lowest of the low, a scrub maggot in all RPG games.... the second I stepped off the shuttle after the opening intro, I was not treated like a lowly grunt like in every other game I've played. Imperial officers were saluting me, calling me "sir," and had a healthy fear and respect for me right from the get-go.

The door guards to the Sith Academy got on one knee and bowed as I entered the building.

One quest-giving imperial officer asked me to perform a quest, and my response was akin to "Do you presume to tell me what to do?!" and his nervously responded with something like "No sir! I would never presume to do such a thing! I am only relaying orders, sir!"

This firmly established this game solidly in the Star Wars universe for me. Any doubts I had washed away at that moment and I know whole-heartedly that Bioware "gets it." The Sith, even the lowest of the low, are at the top of the pecking order in the Empire's military. And it made me feel that way. It was awesome.

Other games like Rift attempt to make you feel special and cool right from the start, but it always felt forced or fake to me. I was very pleasantly surprised to not feel that way in this game. And now that I think about it, even as I played my smuggler they had a bit of that too. You start out with your own ship and crewmates right from the get-go. I am curious how the other classes play and make you feel, now.

It's little touches like that that really impressed me with this game. And I was very cynical about this one. Despite it's still (many) bugs, all the little touches it contains made me warm up to it and now I am really looking forward to it a lot more than I ever expected to.

Yeah. I saw it was a level 19 mission, but I was wondering if the fact that it's offered at 14 was significant.

I think I might be able to pound out 16 before we run...

I have my Sage up to 18. If you're gonna give Hammer a go, I can try my hand at healing (which I am spec'd for).

Just for the record, Hammer is much tougher than Esseles. We're going to need a dedicated healer, and I've had "damn I'm squishy" moments from before I picked up my "increased defense chance" talents. Enemies average level 18.

Its good you have one then ;)

My Scoundrel got his ship at lvl 18 (FINALLY!), and I dinked around for another level or so before rolling up a Sith Inquisitor to try out the other stealth class and, incidentally, play with the Imperial story. Since my plan of going Imp at launch has been sort of derailed by our guild plans, I figured I'd go ahead and test the waters now. So far, my only complaint with class design in general is too many abilities to track/use in combat. I'd really rather be able to just focus on 4 or 5 and leave it at that, but I suspect I'm in the minority among MMO gamers in that respect.

Numbuk - if you want in-your-face brutish melee style, but don't want to be sneaky, you can go Commando (Trooper). Those guys are pretty hefty bruisers.

If he wants melee, he'd go Vanguard. Commandos are the assault cannon/combat medic. Vanguards are the stock striking gut-bayonetting troopers.

Even then...the vast majority of a trooper's skills(regardless of AC) are going to be ranged. Stick with Assassin/Shadow or Operative/Scoundrel if you want melee.

Yeah, I haven't fiddled with a Vanguard yet to speak with any authority on their rotations. All I know is that the Tactics tree seems to have a lot of bonuses for those two attacks.

Right, that's the ticket. Never played my trooper past lvl 10 anyway, so I guess that's why I got the two confused. Of course, my mistake did allow me to say "go commando", which was worth a grin on my end at least :D

I got my vanguard to 16 before the doors closed. He was pretty fun up close and in-your-face. I am very likely to pick that in live. At the very last moment I tried a body style 2 trooper since I'd thought the body 3 was too big. It felt small and wrong after all.

My initial character many builds ago was a trooper. Got him to 28 before he got wiped.

I did get a nice bump 'accidentally' (decided to try different commands) and found myself several levels higher and transported to a higher level planet. :o

I will play all classes at some point and really did enjoy playing the trooper. So long ago but grouping with one recently in mid 20s I can say they have lots more dps than my scoundrel. On the other hand, I saved us from a wipe when we had several Silver, Gold group re-spawns. Deep down I will sacrifice dps for a good old fashion rescue every time (always got the Ranger AA healing skills playing EQ).

Having said that, my favorite class/class story so far has been Bounty Hunter (he has healing too!).

I know, I had a similar thought when he hit that one last night. =) It was hilariously eerie.

Also, just to plug it again since we're reading the thread..

Moo's got guild forums up for us at http://ore.gladerebooted.org ...

Since I started late, I didn't get my Sith Assassin up high enough to really get a feel for her, but my companion and I died enough to make me miss the heals. I've got a feeling my playstyle might just become "pocket healer for my heavily armored companion", which would mean another healer for the guild if I get good enough at it.

That is indeed a nice outcome of the companion mechanic.

If I was to play light-side when the game goes live, yeah I'd probably play a trooper or a Jedi. But my friends and I already made the decision over a year ago to play on the Empire side, and set up a guild at that time for it as well. I suppose I am not locked into playing that, since many people play alts. But I am the type of player who only focuses on one class at a time until I feel like I've maxed out that class. And then I play another class and do the same to it.

They did attempt to get a light-side guild going too. However, someone made the decision to put it on another server. I was against this, as it's extremely likely that TOR will have something similar to "bind on account" items and republic alts would not benefit from that.

Holy Crap, Batman!

I did not know about this, and am highly looking forward to playing with that feature in the future.

That... would have been nice to know.

It alleviates some of my concern about healing and the UI.

However, I still think it needs to be fully scalable, movable and customizable.

Been spending time over at the TOR forums...

My god what a closed minded bunch of angry fanboys over there.

I hesitate to say that the community is worse than WoW's... but its close.

My favorite part is where a lot of the testers think they should get something special for being a tester.

Heh. Yeah. I love how the elitism always starts "right after me."

The stress testers think there should be a perk for having participated in the beta.

The first weekend beta folks think there should be weekend-specific titles, so they can lord over their Squadron 1120ness over all the later weekenders. I imagine that the closed beta folks had something similar for closed beta vs. weekend/stress/open betas...

Not to mention all the people who stick "Collector's Edition VIP" in their sigs...
