Pre-orders are up.

For those who never got around to finishing all 8 class stories, if you pre-order this expansion, you get 12x experience boost between now and Dec 1. You could use this to finish your class stories before the expansion raises the level cap to 60.

Huh. That might actually be worth spending money on. The chance to play through the class stories without having to grind planetary quest repeats?

Gearing might become an issue, though. Hrm.

For doing planetary missions, gearing is not terribly important. This process is intended to keep you over leveled for the content you are doing, so gear won't really matter much.

Also, the planetary commendation revamp back in..2.0(?) made keeping your characters in planet appropriate gear fairly trivial (as long as you do enough missions to earn planetary comms). There is now only one type of planetary commendation that you can use to buy gear from any planetary vendor (your level or lower). This means you can go back to lower level planets and do 'comms runs' to earn a few extra commendations for gear. Commando/Smuggler have it the easiest because the three heroics on Ord Mantell give a total of 9 planetary comms and take about 5 minutes to do. Other classes can run through the heroics on Coruscant or Drommund Kaas, or the other lower level planets.

Because you will be over leveled (mostly doing gray missions), the content is not going to be terribly challenging... You're just there to see the stories you missed.

Did the xp curve change? The last time I played, if you only did the story missions, you'd quickly find yourself underleveled. That's what I'm assuming the 12x XP bonus is supposed to compensate for.

Are you saying the 12x overcompensating so that you'll outlevel the content and not need to be reasonably geared?

There were some tweaks to the XP curve when the game went Free to Play, but I'm not sure of the specifics.

I'll see if anyone on reddit has done any calculations on it, but I'm pretty sure if you get 12x experience for doing your planetary story missions, it will keep you over leveled.

Well, i'm reading different accounts and, not surprisingly, seeing a wide variety of results.

It sounds like the 12x XP bonus does stack with the general experience boosts you can get in the game, but not with other, class specific XP bonuses (legacy, boost packs, etc...).

From what I'm seeing, after the first few planets, folks are pretty much over leveled at that point. Trying to keep gear up is going to be a challenge, but I don't think it's going to matter much. You get some gear rewards from the missions, and, as I said before, you can always go back and farm a few plantary comms to fill in empty slots for you and your favorite companions.

Here is Dulfy's write-up on the experience bonus stuff...

http://dulfy.net/2014/10/06/swtor-preor ... -missions/

Dulfy.net wrote:
Players who have pre-ordered Shadow of Revan expansion can level up exclusively via class missions (Makeb missions included).

When does the XP bonus start?
The 12X XP boost starts immediately when you pre-order Shadow of Revan expansion: http://www.swtor.com/purchase/item-shpre (you may need to restart the game for this bonus to kick in)
It ends on December 1, 2014, at 11:59PM PST / December 2, 2014, at 7:59AM GMT.
You will only able to see this boost by looking at the class mission reward page on your mission log. Your xp bar won’t be affected.

What boost stack with it?
Legacy Class mission boosts and Cartel Market class mission boosts do not stack with the 12X multiplier.
Guild XP bonus (10%) and Cartel Market general XP boost (25%) do stack with the 12X multiplier.

The 12X Boost only applies to
Class Missions from 1-50
Makeb Main storyline from 50-55

Can I level up via just Class missions?
Yes, a single class mission turn in will net you almost half a level or close to a level depending on your level.
Here is an example: A single class mission turn in at level 47 will give me 224k XP (this is with guild 10% bonus and 25% cartel market XP boost). To level up at level 48 I only need 437k XP.
swtor-class-missions-xp-boost

Will there be a gear gap?
Yes, you won’t be able to keep up with your gear with such an accelerated speed of leveling. Make sure to take any equipment upgrades you can get from the class missions rather than the usual planetary commendations.
Luckily Makeb now has a bolster system that will boost your gear while leveling in Makeb so make sure to interact with the GSI looking terminal you can find on every Makeb island.

Costs to upgrade abilities is now gone
Abilities will cost 0 credits to acquire/upgrade with pre-order, this includes the speeder pilot abilities as well.

In any event, that was always my regret with SWTOR... I was rather enjoying the Jedi Knight, Smuggler, and Bounty Hunter stories on my alts, but got sick of playing all the other stuff I'd already done (or grinding bland minute-to-minute gameplay) to keep up with them. I've heard Operative and Inquisitor were excellent, as well. So.. way to identify an effective way to squeeze a few more bucks out of me at low cost, EA.

Yea, the class stories were really good. I liked all of them really, but the Sith Warrior was a little strange for be since I played her as 100% Light Side.

The Imperial Agent was probably the best, at least for me.

BTW, another tip for keeping your fast leveling characters in level appropriate gear....

If you have existing higher level characters, you can do lower level FP's and Heroics on your high level characters to earn planetary commendations. The items you buy from the planetary commendation vendors are tradeable and can be sent to you lower level alts.

It's not ideal to have to log in another character for this, but it's fairly trivial to do, and probably easier than other options.

It does indeed, but crafting a bunch of expensive mods that you are going to outlevel in a few hours of game play can get expsensive.

If you are going to craft your mods/armorings, I'd suggest greens for the powerleveling.

BTW, this bonus 12x XP thing ends on Dec 1 for anyone still on the fence about finishing their class stories.

BTW, another tip for leveling a fresh character.

Pay the coins to unlock the Treek companion, and keep her geared up. She uses AIM (great for Commando's especially), and can Tank or Heal, depending on stance. I've found that by giving her a mix of tank and healer mods, she can be plenty effective at both as needed without the need to swap gear when you swap stances.

Just be prepared for her incessant blabbing.

Of course if you want to interact with your normal class companions during the leveling, you might not want to go this route...

When levelling, I play this game constantly queued up for a flashpoint. Once I've done one or two, I stop queueing and just keep playing. As a consequence, most planet quests turn "grey" before I get offworld. The exp curve heavily favors the player if you subscribe and actually like grouping.

Also, Treek and HK-51 are really worth having, whether or not you use them in a fight (although they're both great if you can keep them geared.) Crafting is so easy if you have them it's unbelievable.

Nothing prevents a Knight/Consular from travelling to Ord Mantell and doing those three heroics.

Only Smugglers and Commandos can take the quests (unless this has changed recently).

I admit to not having tried it with Ord Mantell, but Bounty Hunters and Agents can definitely take the heroic quests on Korriban, and Sith can definitely take the heroic quests on Nal Hutta. In fact, they can do all the quests that are not class storyline specific. That's always been the case.

Yea, I think the difference with those missions is that they don't give Planetary Comms.

The three missions on Savrip Island do give Plantary Comms (and, last time I did them, could only be done by Smugglers and Commandos).

I doubt it was planned by the developers to be different in this way, but it is.

Yeah, very odd. None of the Ord Mantell quests at all are available to my knight. That's not true on the Empire side.

I just this post on reddit andthought I'd share, as it's relevant to this conversation

Send Comms using Legacy Bank

caparros @ reddit wrote:
I just learned that... you can buy anything that is not bound and legacy bound and put it on the bank, the timer for refund does not expire and you can refund with an alt...

UPDATE: here are some examples that I tested:

Classic commendation: Buy an inheritance/birthright gear for 50 classic (the vendor is in belsavis, ilum and makeb) and put it on legacy bank... log with your alt take the item from the bank and sell it, getting 50 classic commendation back

Fleet commendation: same deal buy any inheritance/birthright gear for 100 fleet and same process

Basic commendation: buy a legacy droid part from czerka and do the same process

Planetary Commendation: just buy anything BoE and send to the legacy bank

F2P/Prefered money restriction/send money between alts: Buy something expensive BoE (like reputation Gree BoL sets, etc) and put on the legacy bank

I will update this thread if I find any way to trade elite and ultimate commendation

Of course, one can just buy the item you want on another character and send it.

Heck, you can even send used character-bound equipment modifications using legacy bound armor shells.

Just a quick tip. When you get to level 47, immediately head to Makeb. One of the recent patches significantly increased the XP you get from Makeb quests, and you also get "Bolstered" to 55, and have an in-combat Heal-Over-Time (remember to interact with the Satellite box, in order to receive these bonuses). Also, the first mission gives you a nice main hand weapon upgrade that you can use at lvl 47.

With the recent XP changes, and the 12X bonus, I was getting an entire level everytime I finished a main quest on Makeb. I did this, solo, on my Agent, and got about 3 levels in around 45 minutes. If you have friends or guildmates helping, it could go much faster.

That depends on whether your goal is to hit 55 as quickly as possible, or finish your class storyline relatively well geared. I hit 47 long before I finished my Agent storyline, and the first Makeb conversation on my ship spoilered single player story elements I hadn't gotten to yet.

I've been going the opposite way, and going back and doing gray bonus quest lines or Heroic 4s solo so I had enough planet comms to by Makeb 140s for my favorite companions before I levelled so far that they were no longer good. I have no use for the "end game" of SWTOR... i just like the single player stories and the flashpoints. This 12x bonus is going to allow me to finish class quests for all 8 classes, finally. then the expansion will come out, I'll play it through once on each faction with my favorite republic/imperial characters, and probably quit again.
