Here are the patch notes.

The changes are quite extensive.
http://www.swtor.com/patchnotes/1129201 ... rly-access

The Dark vs Light stuff is pretty interesting. I'm keen to see how that plays out.

All end game gearing is now RNG via the new Galactic Command System. No gear drops in Operations.

All characters pick advanced class at creation

All classes received a major skills and balance overhaul (always skeptical of these)

If you are interested in the 8 class stories, it's certainly worth the price. That content is mostly unchanged and most of the game is F2P. As a former subscriber, you are in "Preferred" status. Still somewhat restricted, but you should have everything you need to play the level 1-50 class stories.

If you want to see the two most recent chapter based expansions, subscribe for a month and roll a level 60 character.

It's basically KOTOR 3, and almost completely single player at this point.

Even all of the flashpoints have a "Solo" mode, so you can see how those fit into the original story arc.

I'm going back and replaying a couple of classes again. My plan is;

** Do only the main class mission and the main planet story arc (marked in purple in your mission log).

** Do each planet flashpoint in solo mode as I encounter them.

** Do Ilum and it's flashpoints in solo mode

** Skip the Black Hole, Makeb, Oricon, Section-X, and CZ-198. I might do them once (again) as they are somewhat story based, but are they are not a critical part of the game experience. These are basically dailies hubs, and don't provide much value to you once you've seen it once.

** Do the Shadow of Revan story arc, including the tactical flashpoints in Solo mode, Rishi, Yavin IV, and Ziost.

** Do Knights of the Fallen Empire. I'd personally skip the alliance recruitment and Star Fortress stuff at the end, having done it recently. It is worth doing once on one character, just to see the companions and their stories, but unless you are enamored with them, its not content worth repeating.

** Do Knights of the Eternal Throne chapters, and whatever follows (no idea, haven't even started it yet).

There is a ton of content to play/re-play, and most of it is single player accessible. It's probably worth the cost of a month or two or three of subscription. Even the 2 player "Heroic" missions (part of the alliance recruitment process) are easily solable with your companion, if you push their "Rank" up to 20 or so with gifts. With a rank 20-30 companion in 'Heal' mode, you are nearly unkillable.

In fact, that's probably the biggest criticism of the game right now, is that nothing is really dangerous to your character in the solo-mode content.

Edit to add: I would't spend a lot of time or energy trying to re-start an older character. There is a good chance their gear is irrelevant. If you are enamored with a name or esthetic, you can clean out their bank and delete and re-create them. It's also worth noting that they added the ability to put a space in a character name, giving some flexibility to the available name options.

Also, the cartel market (real money stuff) is mostly cosmetic and quality of life stuff (armor and weapon shells, mounts, stronghold decorations, etc..). Definitely not needed to progress, although if you are not going to subscribe, there are some 'unlocks' you might want to make life a little easier (extra hotbars, credit caps, etc...). You can buy all of these things, including some pretty cool "KOTOR" character armor sets from players on the market (GTN) for credits if you prefer to not spend real dollars on random chances to get them.

Edit2: Added Ziost to SoR planets...

^ What Midgen said.

I think I may actually do this. I liked the base game, but I HATED the tedium. It seems like they removed a LOT of that.

I would have to start really fresh, like ground zero with nothing. Maybe I will get it for myself for my birthday.

I'm on Harbinger. It is, by far, the most populated "Standard" server (i.e. not PvP or Role Play).

Most of my Republic characters are in a guild called "Magenta Squadron", but there is only one other person active right now, and I haven't seen him in weeks.

Just a word of warning, Khross has a character in this guild, although he hasn't been online in a year or so :p

I also have an Empire guild called.. "Dark Magenta Squadron". No one playing over there much though.

Feel free to ask for an invite if you want a guild tag. I never what character I'll be on, so it might be easiest to coordinate here via PM's.

Just an update with my impressions of the KoTET expansion.

I'm about 75% through the chapters on my initial play though, and wow.. it's *really* good. In fact, I think it might be their best work so far. It's definitely the best quality of any expansion so far.

The story is good.
The writing is good.
The gameplay/combat is - interesting - they added some variety to break up the trash mob killing
The cut scenes/cinematics are improved - it is much more immersive - little things like the improved facial expressions, and subtle animations really help with the immersion in the story.

The jury is still out on the new Dark vs Light system, which is apparently heavily tilted to the Light Side on my server.

The jury is still out on the new Galactic Command system. I'm using my Commando to play through the expansion. She went from 65 to 70 in the first three chapters (using some legacy XP bonus gear and an XP boost). She's three levels into Galactic Command and the two crates she recieved so far didn't have much in them of use, other than some companion gifts (always useful), and some cosmetic legacy bound armor. Not sure yet if that is worth keeping until I see the entire set.

If anyone is interested in checking out this story, I'd suggest a 'Start at Level 60' character, play through Knights of the Fallen Empire and then Knights of the Eternal Throne.

Someone posted this to Reddit. It's the full republic story progression in flow chart mode up to and including the last expansion.

It includes everything, including the operations and daily areas.

There might be something similar out there for the Empire side. If I find it, I'll post it.

Also, holy pain in the *** trying to get a name through the system.

The changes to the companions is huge. T7 being able to heal me, changed the whole game for me. I am plowing through stuff, level 15 already and I just got to Coruscant. Leveling is much faster.

Prior to the expansion release, they had XP gain at 200%. You would be level 30 by now. :p

The one problem with fast leveling is leveling past your gear. It's not a huge deal, since your companions are so powerful now. The best way to get gear is to run the Heroics. You can grab them on fleet, or from a terminal at the spaceport I think.

Also, they implemented level sync, so if you outlevel the planet, it will automatically scale you down, and, your higher level friends can group with you without significant penalty.

Like the flashpoints?

I'm having a LOT of trouble keeping my gear up. I'm skipping all the BS side quests, and I'm almost 20 on Balmorra...And the vendors sell nothing but ****.

No, the planetary heroics. You can grab them from the terminal on the planets you have access to, or grab them on fleet from the main hub console (It moved to the inner ring in the Combat Training section of the map).

You can grab bunches of them and use the transporter icon to jump from mission to mission without travel concerns. You get a crate with two pieces of level appropriate blue armor (random) and some nice credits and XP for each mission. The trick to these is to figure out which ones can be done quickly solo, and skip the ones with a lot of trash mobs. If you are on the republic side, the three on Ord Mantell and the four on Coruscant are basicall free money/gear. There are several others you'll discover along the way that are fast and easy.

Flashpoints are not really of any value except for XP and Story. They no longer drop gear except random green vendor junk.

The old planetary gear vendors still exist, but they removed the 'Data Crystals/Commendations' currencies, so you have to buy with credits. Ironically, the best way to earn credits is running the Heroics, which gives better gear than you can buy, so...

Mus, what server are you on?

Ebon Hawk I think? I started back where we we were.

They should have left in the Flashpoint gear. I mean, its useless unless you're leveling. :(

I've always hated Alderaan, the giant flying dolphins, the bug people, the noise they make when talking. Not to mention, the story on the world...blah, blah, blah. I hate it, I even said once I am glad this place gets blown up.

Now that I only have to do the class mission there, not so bad really. I don't mind it as much.

Yea, the people and the story on Alderaan remind me too much of real life. I didn't mind the bugs so much. For me, the biggest problem (prior to all the travel shortcuts) was just how freakin' big the place is. Lot's of running around to unlock quick travel.

I do really like the landscape though. It's truly beautiful.. sorta the polar opposite of say.. Tatooine or Ilum and Hoth.

Reall,

I was looking at the guild roster on Harbinger (Magenta Squadron), and noticed a character named Zedlin that hadn't logged in for two years.

Are you still playing on Ebon Hawk?

Just curious, I've been on the lookout for your character.

That's what I don't understand. The name is "Zedlin" and the comment says "Raell". He's level 31 and hasn't been online in two years.

Didn't you say the name of your current character is also Zedlin?
