The PR in this company/project makes me /facepalm sometimes.

This wouldn't have been a good announcement to make BEFORE you wipe the forums, or as part of yesterday's Friday update? No? Instead, you're going to tweet it.

I think, if you are pre-registered with a guild, your first character is tagged automatically when you start. I'm not sure though.

Your first character is given an automatic invite; if it's declined, the invite passes to the next character you make. Once you accept one, you stop getting invites.
