Good lord, talk about phoning it in on the PC porting...

Yeah but there's been a mod to enable it since day one.

There's been a mod to enable it. Can you understand how that's not a glowing recommendation?

I'm saying it's a non-issue. No different than a day one patch by Bethesda themselves. If the point you're trying to make is that it's a shitty PC port, well, no one will argue.

Yeah, unfortunately, I can't think of a single multi-platform game in the last year that wasn't dumped on PC and patched later.

Fortunately, Skyrim on PC is already 100x better than either console version, and it's only going to get better.

Oh yeah, the 1% of the good mods. The modding community can be a boon, but a small % of the output is actually good.

Not sure I'm understanding here, can't you pretty much stuff an unlimited number of items in a single chest?

I'd almost be with you guys on the LAA Flag thing, except Skyrim simply doesn't need 4 GB of RAM. It's resource management code is actually pretty good.

Not to mention all the sacks.

Sure if you like a big mishmash of stuff. Objects in containers are unsorted (compared to items sold by vendors or in a player inventory)
Honeyside has only 2 bookshelves (which mine got bugged because I tried to store too many books in them so are now unusable, even post-patch)
I tend to pack-rat in Elder Scrolls/Fallout games meaning I like to save all the odds and ends I come across.

Off the top of my head I like to sort things in the following containers:

Weapons I might use
Weapons just to collect
Items for Sale
Armor I might use
Armor just to collect
Previous versions of armor that I intend to sell (now that I've found better)
Books
Spell Books
Smithing Items
Alchemy Items
Cooking Items
Soul Gems
Future-Use tradeskill items (Falmer Helmets, hide bracers, necklaces, rings)
Completed potions for sale
Potions that I'll use later on when I switch from melee->spellcasting or Light->Heavy or Archery->1hand
Various Armor sets (I like the mannequins for this) Dragonscale, Dragon Plate, Thieves Guild, Cicero's/Jesters Armor, Nightengale, Ebony Mail Set, Daedric set (if I ever get any)
Potion Recipies & notes
Misc quest items (Dragon Claws for example)

Beyond that, (I'm playing on X-Box so no inventory mods) I would like to sort Jewelry differently than armor sets.

Other minor complaints:
a) Why can I not smith circlets? I can do necklaces & rings.
b) why do potion timers count down while I'm using the enchanter? I don't have time to rename items, and sometimes dont even have time to find the items I am looking for before that 30 second timer ends.
c) There should be an option to ONLY store grand souls in grand soul gems.

Assuming you play an unmodded Skyrim, sure. 2GB of RAM is simply not enough once you start adding high res texture packs, new armor sets, higher grid loading in the open world, post processing, etc.

You know ... I thought the same thing, but I monitored it's resource usage with a fairly robust selection of high resolution textures (Skyrim_HD, Xenius's Mods, Vurt's Flora, etc.), a Flash based inventory mod, a couple of crafting mods, and several tweaks including FXAA post-process stuff. It still never breaks 2 GB of RAM on my rig. Of course, the high resolution textures for Skyrim are pretty small all things considered.

Did you do the uGrid stuff? That's a REAL performance hit.

I did. uGrid=7, MaxCellswhatever=64 ...

Still doesn't break 2 GB.

Well, how about this?

TSEV Acceleration Layer offers up to 40% performance increase
Quote:
This patch will improve your frame rate by up to 40% in all CPU-dependent situations, i.e. especially in cities.
It works mostly by rewriting some x87 FPU code and inlining a whole ton of useless getter functions along the critical paths because the developers at Bethesda, for some reason, compiled the game without using any of the optimization flags for release builds.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this,
but I don't want to wade through 14 pages on a game I don't play ... But, I ran across this today and thought it was hilarious.

Finally got started! This is fantastic, best TES game yet, IMO. My only complaint is that I liked the format of the TAB character menu in oblivion somewhat better, especially the character paper doll, although the map format is nicer here. I do miss having ability scores, but the classless system is awesome so far. It does seem to rush you into the main quest a bit, up to the point where you

Spoiler:
are summoned by the greybeards

but now that I reached that point I'm striking out to explore some of the other aspects of the game.

My big dilemma is which faction to help out. I'm tempted to go with the Stormcloaks based on the fact that the Imperials almost executed me in the introduction, but on the other hand, the Imperial guy that helps you escape from the dragon is pretty cool.

Spoiler:
Neither faction is the perfect and "good" choice. The Stormcloaks basically want all races, other than Nords, out of Skyrim (regardless if they are helping their cause or not, for the most part). The Imperials have banned the worship of Talos, which is a good and just god the Nords have been worshipping for centuries, and they are in bed with the Thalmor faction, which has their own agendas.

I chose the stormcloaks for my first character, which was a noble Nord barbarian. And while I didn't fully agree with their agenda, I accepted their fanatacism and just enjoyed the ride. I did the same with the Imperials on my second character, the evil assassin.

You don't have to pick either side. But it does make things more interesting if you do.

Would it be silly of me to buy this game on the Games for Windows-platform vs Steam-platform? I know I want it on the PC but unsure which venue to buy it from yet.

I'm assuming both have modding capability. I know they both have achievements but the GFW on adds to your Xbox score, which is kind of cool. Anything major for one platform vs the other?

How is dual wielding supposed to work? Do you just use the two mouse buttons to attack with each weapon independently, or is there some way to make a "combo" attack or a dual power attack or something?

RE: Stormcloaks vs. Imperials & Dark Brotherhood
Spoiler:
Dark Brotherhood quest has you eventually assassinating the emperor. The Imperials however are mostly sympathetic to the talos worshipers, its primarily the Thalmor who are the issue. The Thalmor are basically coercing the empire into various decisions. its not that the Empire is evil, simply that the Thalmor are the ones pulling the strings--the Thalmor are manipulative SOBs. Maybe if you're playing Altimer they're not such assholes

I do advise you to get your winterhold house before completing any of the Empire/Stormcloak line, as completing that quest may make Winterhold house quest line uncompleteable.
