So, I'm getting ready to start this game for the first time.

I bought the 'legendary' version on steam, which includes Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, as well as mounted combat.

I'm going to start a casual playthrough, but I though I'd ask here for suggestions for 'must have' mods?

I would the Live an Alternate Life Mod. It allows you explore the world without starting the primary narrative content. Although, there are some quests you cannot do without advancing the primary narrative.

The Static Mesh Enhancement Mods are good.

SkyUI is good.

Look through the SteamWorkshop for the highest rated water, light, blood, and flora fixes.

And whichever unofficial Skyrim patch supports your DLC content pool.

Those are really the only must-haves in my opinion.

Caliente's Better Females is a huge bonus, and there are non-nude patch versions. The models are just vastly improved over the Bethesda shenanigans.

See my mods thread.

Edit - Also see the top files list on skyrim.nexusmods.com. Most of those are in my list.

I'm a big fan of Deadly Dragons, and a mod that makes civilians not try to fight dragons called Run For Your Lives!

Better Bows adds a wide variety of..well..bows.

If you can get it to work, Armed to the Teeth is really cool because it allows you to have multiple visible weapons at once. However, it can be a major pain in the *** to get it working and it can have a lot of script artifiacts laying around in its wake, especially if you use mods to add more weapons to the game. I don't really recommend it if you don't want to have to use the Construction Set to fool around with it.

JaySuS Swords adds more swords, unsurprisingly.

The Paarthurnax Dilemma
Spoiler:
allows you to force the blades to accept your decision not to kill Paarthurnax.

If you didn't read the spoiler, let's just say it adds a third option at a certain point.

WARZONES! makes the little battles between various factions a lot larger and more significant.

The ones I currently play with are:

- SKSE
- The Dance of Death (new kill move animations, and ones that unlock with different perks... customizable percentage, camera POV switching, as well as upping the beheading percentage)
- Unofficial patches
- High res texture pack
- Nernie's Rangers (awesome outfit options, new crafting bow/arrows, ranger outpost, house, etc.)
- Whiterun Trees
- SkyUI
- Acquisitive Soul Gems (no more small souls in grand gems)
- Dynamic Merchants
- Better Vampires (so many improvements to vampires, most of them customizable as well)
- Player Size Adjuster (first person Nord is far too tiny)
- Realistic Water Textures
- Blood on weapons remains longer
- Enhanced Enemy AI

I have played about seven levels of this, and I honestly don't think I'll be doing much more with it.

I spent some time reading over the Wiki to try to understand the classes and factions a bit better, and based on what I've read there, I don't really feel attracted to any of them.
