So I am considering starting off with a fuel tanker as well in order to make some early game cash. I figure a lot of people will be playing combat roles and sucking up a ton of fuel and needing to be resupplied especially as they venture further and further away. Serving as a mobile fuel supply seems like a good way to make money serving a newly discovered or accessed system and then piping fuel to any refineries setup in those systems.

Also I get lifetime insurance on any ship I buy because I was a kickstarter donor right (even if the current packages say 6 months)?

Not any more. The lifetime insurance stopped being offered on Nov. 26th of last year. That said, normal hull insurance isn't meant to be where the cash sinks are (it was meant to be originally, but then they realized that if that's the case, offering lifetime insurance is too big an advantage, so they shifted the bulk of the cash sinking to equipment and cargo insurance), so I wouldn't let that deter you.

If you want to blow your money on a tanker, it might be fun/lucrative to run escort for you now and then.

Well if our "fleet" moves anywhere at once it might be nice to have resupply with us as well.

I have a tanker too. I'll be happy to accept an escort (or rather, my NPC crew of the tanker will be happy to accept increased local security).
