I saw a demo unit of this at Best Buy on Tuesday. It was kind of unusual, the screen, since it was trying to do 3D without glasses or anything. When using it, I couldn't really tell if I was seeing in 3D, per se. It wasn't particularly uncomfortable, just.. weird. I'm not sure if I was supposed to be trying to cross my eyes, like with those stereoscopic images.

You could be someone who can't see stereoscopic images. The 3D effect when turned up is rather obvious and quite good. My biggest issue with the 3DS is that the viewing angle to get the effect is pretty small and uncomfortable to hold after a while.

That's quite possible. I always did have trouble with those images.

I'm excited...I have a preorder arriving on Sunday. Too bad the launch titles uniformly suck. No one launches with good stuff anymore. :(

I really like this thing. Battery life's pretty naff (logical, though a bit of an annoyance), but the 3D effect is effective, and I played for around 6 hours straight with no ill effects (headache, nausea, urge to kill Ronald Reagan to impress Jodie Foster). I deem the hardware a rousing success.

Now...if Nintendo will just get some damned decent games out for it...

Because I felt stupid buying a system without a game (though its included software is quite generous), I surveyed the rather sad crop of launch titles and decided on LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, as TellTale is a time-tested developer, and the LEGO games are pretty much "graft new IP onto existing system and ship it back out again" at this point...I figured it would be hard for it to be screwed up.

My assumptions paid off...LEGO SW3 is a fun little game, does a good job of showing depth and three-dimensionality, and is a solid little platformer.

I'm really interested to see what happens when some of the heavy hitters make their way to stores (Super Mario 3D, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, etc.) but I'm rather scared it'll end up much like the Wii: an impressive tech demo system with little to no interesting software. We'll see.

Wait, I'm a bit disconnected from handheld news. The 3DS doesn't play DS games? Or is your gripe about no decent games specific to 3D titles?

Don't let Pheona click this

Seriously, if you don't want to have to buy another or lose yours to her... just don't.
