After screwing with graph paper for 20+ years of gaming, I think I'm going to break down a buy some dungeon tiles for the game I'm running with my GF & daughter. Any thoughts on sets? Or is there any reason to stick with only 3.5 edition tiles?

No reason at all. As long as your game uses 1-inch squares as a standard unit of measurement (which most do), then the world is your oyster when it comes to tiles.

Just go with the ones you like best. Architectural and/or terrain features don't carry any rules weight, so it's not like there's any system lock-in occurring. It's up to you how much you might need to purchase from a manufacturer who is currently producing vs. buying cheap lots off of eBay from someone out of business.

D&D 4th ed released a lot of nice tile sets within the last year and a half of various settings. Forest, city, cave, dungeon, etc. They are all nicely made and double-sided.

I love dungeon tiles, the newer sets within the last couple years have more variations to them than some of the earlier sets. the 3.5 sets are not made anymore, and IMHO, the 4th edition ones are better quality ( not in like material type way, just more terrain variation's than what 3.5 had, and you would get a huge variety where in the newere sets like Dungeons wont have anything forest related etc..) its still hard getting like the perfect setup, so you will have trees where you dont want them etc, but if you do play 4th, its so much easier as everything is in squares and the tiles work great for figuring out who is blast/burst etc

Wotc is very bad at making tiles for only a few months and not going back and remaking them. There are a few sets we cannot find anymore that are not outrageously expensive.

They are a pain in the butt to move around once you get a few sets cause you end up with like 50 different size cardboard squares, our group has all pitched in and has most of the sets, Office Max makes a great like file folder tray that holds maybe 2" thick plastic like file folders that lock each one will hold almost and entire set of dungeon tiles.

Amazon almost always has dungeon tiles sets at buy 3 or 4 get 1 free. But support your local FLGS if you have one!
