I've been jonesing for a Dungeon Keeper-type game for a while. Evil Genius satiated it back in 2004. But that urge has risen again in the last couple years. Indie games like "Dungeons" and "Impire" came close, but they didn't hit the mark. There was too much direct control involved, especially in Impire. I prefer the minions to live out their own lives and take suggestions not direct orders. I prefer designing the shape of each room, instead of prefabs.

Well, apparently this kickstarter came and went under my radar. A few die hard fans of Dungeon Keeper like myself got together to make a true clone in the spirit of DK and a few others like it. They exceeded their number and plan on releasing the game within the next couple of months. It will be called War for the Overworld. It looks to be exactly what I've been looking for and they even have high praise from Peter Molyneux himself and giving them a solid thumbs up.

If you preorder, you can play the game in it's current beta state. I have, and it definitely is shaping up to be a game in the very spirit of Dungeon Keeper. I can't wait for this thing!

Oh man, both Dungeon Keeper and Evil Genius were great. Looking forward to this one now. How polished is the Beta?

It feels more like an alpha, but it's still nicely done. There aren't any sounds yet, but the interface feels mostly done (can't rotate camera yet).

They nailed the feeling of dungeon keeper in terms of level building.

I haven't given it more than 20 minutes of my time yet, but it's already better than any of the other games I mentioned that I was disappointed in.

From what I hear it does definitely sound more like an alpha. I bought the game for my brother not realizing that fact, but I'll be buying it for myself immediately once it's finished. I LOVED me some DK and one of my great gaming disappointments is that I never saw a part 3. If this turns out to be even half as good as DK, I'll be hopelessly and happily addicted.
