I view 2E as "quaint."

Or possibly like an old high school girlfriend. Fond memories, but when you see her facebook profile today....... yeesh.

That sounds more like 1e to me.

2e I like pretty well as long as you don't get into the later stuff like Skills and Powers which sort of suck ***. The Complete <insert race/class here> Handbooks are hit or miss as well.

Still the system is quite playable especially if you houserule away some of the dumber restrictions.

Baldur's Gate uses the AD&D second edition rule set. Obviously, you can't get 100% of the rules into a game, but it is based off that ruleset.

I enjoyed Baldur's Gate and played through it at least once, trying different classes.

I didn't care for Baldur's Gate 2, and stopped playing it when my ranger obtained the cabin in the woods. I couldn't stand the class redefinition that occurred for rangers between BG and BG2.

I much prefered the NWN2 games.

What do you mean class redefinition? They are exactly the same except in BG2 you get 2 free points in two weapon style.

That's not what I recall, but its been so long, I could be mistaken, or thinking of another game.

But I recall significant changes to the game play for rangers from when I first played BG, and the changes removed some of the fun, and the story started to drag.

Yeah, that doesn't happen. They are the same class except they redid the weapon profeciency system in BG2 that introduced individual weapons and they added weapon styles. One of the perks to being a ranger was 2 free points in the two weapon style which brought the thac0 penalty when dual wielding to 0/-4. A further point could be spent to get it to 0/-2. Other than that, they had no changes...except they could hit higher levels and have more ranger spells, where as in BG1, if you didn't have Tales of the Sword Coast, they couldn't even cast spells, but if you did, the exp cap went up enough to allow them an extra level and the ability to cast level 1 spells.

BG2 even added kits to the mix. Rangers actually came out fairly well with the stalker and archer kits. Even the beastmaster kit wasn't bad. Lots of bonuses with the only downside being that they can't use metal weapons. Might have been a problem in BG1 where there weren't many magical weapons that weren't swords, but in BG2, everything bleeds magical equipment. Considering some classes got totally worthless kits(fighter with his crappy kensai and wizardslayer kits come to mind immediately)

Wow. Actually, both the kensai and berserker can be very good fighter kits, I'm not sure if you've read about others' experiences with them or tried them out yourselves. Although, both go from merely decent to incredible if you dual-class them from either kit to say a thief or mage, especially the kensai. In my current game of BG2, I brought a kensai to level 9 then dual-classed to a mage who is now level 12. With a single buff he can lower his AC to equal any other fighter in the group, which is the kensai's only weakness; with several rounds of buffing he can make himself far superior to any other fighter.

That is incredibly tedious. Buffs don't last nearly long enough for it to be worth it in the long run. Not unless you rest after each and every battle. Which just adds more tediousness. I'd rather sport armor that is always on rather than rely on buffs. I also absolutely hate the fluff of the kensai kit.

That's just simply not true. You can throw up one 2nd level buff in Blur that will last for an entire combat and the kensai's AC will be as good as any armored fighter. Or you can cast Shield. Or you can cast Ghost Armor. Or you can cast Spirit Armor. Or you can counter the bad AC with Mirror Image or Stoneskin. I'm actually playing this class combination right now, and it's not tedious at all. By the time I'm out of buffs, the party itself has gone through many battles and would need to rest anyway. Oh and also, after the buffs this character is better than any other fighter I could have in the party.

Blur doesn't give AC against melee attacks. You can cast the first level spell Armor which lasts a long time, but that only gives AC 5, which I think is equal to chain mail. The higher level armor spells only last for rounds. Spirit armor comes to mind at AC 2, but again, only last 3 plus caster level rounds, meaning it will only be good for 2 fights at the most, likely only one. Also, all of those buffs that you too rounds to cast(which start ticking as soon as you cast the first one and you need to know combat is ahead for them to do any good) can all be dispelled by the plethora of buff stripping spells the enemy casters love to throw about. Even your own dispel magic can screw you over if you aren't careful.

Actually Blur causes all enemies' missile and melee attacks made against you to be -3 to hit, as I'm reading it right out of the manual. There's also a Shield Amulet you can find with over 40 charges. Regardless, all I'm saying is that from my own personal experience (and others'), the kensai/mage is quite powerful and not tedious in the least.

In game, the actual effect only gives you missile defense, not melee. Not to mention a Kensai/mage dual class is going to have balls for HP considering the mage 1 to warrior class 3 per level.

By the time that becomes an issue, a Kensai/Mage can cast Tenser's which doubles his HP.

Kensai/Mage is pretty much the most overpowered combo in the game, you can solo the game on impossible with it.

Until all of his buffs get dispelled. Then he is pretty worthless.

Spell Immunity: Abjuration means you can't be dispelled. In fact most mods that increase the difficulty of the game make use of this, Breach is also Abjuration so anyone protected by this cannot have their buffs removed without using 9th-level spells.

There is only one way to solve this. Multiplayer game, see who whips who.
