Each character on a free account is required to obtain a sigil in order to train in levels that exceed each multiple of 4. So when you reach enough xp to train 5th level, you must have acquired your Copper Sigil. To train 9th level you will need to have acquired the Silver Sigil (etc. on up).
In other words, you are capped at 4, then 8, then 12, then 16. The sigil is the bottle-opener for your level cap.

Sigils are randomly offered as rewards from any level-appropriate quest. When you are choosing your reward from the quest turn-in NPC look at the list of items carefully. It is advisable to take the sigil any time you see it, even though they may also be offering a nice piece of loot. Sigils are bound to the character that acquires it. In fact, it is not an actual item that appears in your inventory. After accepting it you will simply notice that your xp bar tells you that you are level 3 of 8, instead of 3 of 4 (or whatever).

If you haven't found a sigil by the time you are required to have it for training, you may still accrue xp up to 1 point shy of 2 levels beyond your last trained level.

Little brother is on the T server. I'll probably dabble on it some.

OK, I think I get it a little better. No luck on the Sigils though. =(

I am now (1 of 4) (Rank 10) 19,999/20,000 and got a message saying I cannot gain any more until I level. I have started reding all the quests in hard mode now, after repeating them all a second time and no Sigil. I can get the Sigil from the starter island right? (Also sitting at 700 and some of the 750 kills, but no complete it at get the 2,500+ EXP if I can't earn EXP right now).

Suggestions accepted.

You have enough ranks to get level 3! Just go to your class trainer and ask them to level you up bud. Also, I would suggest leaving the starter island and going to stormreach. You can get the sigils from any quest.

I finally figured out part of my problem. I misread the message from the ranger trainer and I could have leveled up. I finally went to Stormreach, got a Copper Sigil and am now able to go to level 8, I trained at the trainer (for level two, which I could have done ages ago) and did another mission so now I can go to level 3, but decided to log as it was getting late last night.

When I log in tonight, I should be able to ding level 3, go back to the first island, finish the kill 750 task and between that and a couple more tasks back in storm reach, should be able to hit level 4 without problem.

One of the things that dinging level 2 did was unlock two weapon fighting. Is there someplace in Stormreach where I could buy a couple 1 handed axes (to take advantage of the dwarven axe bonus and the two weapon fighting).

As usual, the help is appreciated.

Downloading this now! I can't wait to try it out. The original DDO I didn't like, but part of that was that I couldn't afford it alongside the other games I was playing at the time, so maybe this will be an improvement.

Still, 9 hours to DL is going to suck. I think my daughter is going to be told no YouTube or music downloading when she gets home until this finishes.

edit: done downloading. I'll create a character tomorrow prolly on Thelanis.

Ok..

How do the PrCs work? From what I gleaned online there are PrCs for each class at some point, but it looks from the character creation like it's really just a preselection of feats and skills. Can you actually PrC or are there really just base classes?

If so, I'm going to be a tad annoyed. I'm already kind of annoyed that there are no PrCs to make spellcasting multiclasses effective.

PrCs are Action Point perks you can qualify for.

There are multiple "ranks" per level. Each rank, gives you 1 action point to spend on Enhancements to improve your character. Some of them are very basic, but as you spend more and more action points, the better enhancements start opening up.

In DDO, PrC's are just Enhancements that you select once you meet the prerequisites. For instance, Rangers can select Arcane Archer as an Enhancement once they reach lvl 6, and have selected all the appropriate Feats and/or Enhancements. By selecting this PrC, they get access to skills and other Enhancements that grant many of the PnP abilities that Arcane Archers get.

Here is a list of all the PrC's currently available.

If you go to your class trainer, the second option on their list is Action Points.

As previously mentioned, you start at level 1 of 4 and have 0 Ranks. As you earn experience, you mini-ding Ranks, but at the same time are earning experience towards levels. Levels take quite a bit of EXP, so the mini-dings from Ranks make it a little better.

T here is a bubble bar in the bottom right hand corner that counts your ranks, I think by 5s (or maybe it's how many for each level, I dunno for sure yet, I'm still a newb and going from memory here). Each time you gain a rank you earn an Action Point.

Think of Action Points like Alternate Advancement points in EQ (except you cannot control EXP going to them). Once you have one or more saved up, go to your class trainer and you can (through the second option line, first option line is leveling up) see a list of what you can buy.

Mostly Action points give you minor boosts to round out your character. Some are MUCH better than others. (Dwarven Axe Bonus, Dwarven Armor Bonus both come immediately to mind).

If you want to aim for PrCs, pay attention to what you pick not only in leveling (Feats), but in spending your action points on Enhancements. Many requirements for the PrCs are a blend of Feats & Enhancements.

Action Points can be respec'd; Feats generally* cannot.

*Each character receives a 1-time single Feat exchange, which is handled by an NPC named Fred in house Jorasco.

So, do you ever die in this game? :)

I made a Dwarf Fighter on ... Sardona, maybe? I've solo'd through a bunch of the quests on the island, and never felt particularly threatened with imminent death. Thought about leaving the island early, but I heeded the warning to stay there. I dunno, I may or may not keep playing, but, since it's free, guess it doesn't hurt to leave it on my machine.

Action Points are a reroll mechanic added to d20 Modern and to the Eberron campaign setting. You spent them to reroll a d20. I don't recall how many you got, how often you got them, or if you were able to get them back.

Is it just me, or do you attack every time you click the target? It seems that the autoattack doesn't do much of anything but I can swing really fast, like in Diablo, just by clicking the target.

Funny, I didn't even realize there's an auto-attack. When I walk around the island, though, I hear all of these weapon swooshes, indicating that a lot of other newbs also have a habit of clicking on things.

Yeah, I cannot see where the auto attack does anything. I tried turning it on and then standing close to, moving around and even targetting mobs, with no effect. Left click and hold seems to work fine for me though.

Now if I can only get back online (no internet for two days at the house now because of the rain/floods).

You're the CDC, man, you better have Internet! Oh, wait, you mean you can't play at work? :)

And, at the risk of derailing - which "free EQ server" do you play on, Lenas?

OK, I finally died last night! Yay!

Went to do the island quest outside the village where you jump off the cliff ... Decided to run it on normal instead of solo. Got to the boss mob (the ice bug or whatever), who toasted me. Ran it again on solo level and made it through. Really, it was too easy - fewer mobs, etc.

I've decided that I kind of like the puzzles and the traps, though. Got a little rush running through the traps ... I also like the combat AI - the mobs actually move around, or pull back an use ranged combat, that kind of thing.

Still haven't leveled up, however; I also haven't used any of the combat stances or anything. Guess I should investigate those!

I hope one day they actually go through and add Sharn. I'd become a VIP member if they did that...
