If that's the case, then sorcerer is the official name for the class, as 9th level was "name level."

I didn't mean the ancient history of the system. I meant as a whole. But yes, I also agree with the spirit of your comments.

9th level may have been name level for some classes but there was no universal "name level" in any class. Name level was the first level at which getting the next level took the same amount of experience as getting all the previous levels combined.

For Magic-Users that was 11th level; it took 375K to get to 11th and 750 for 12th.

The official name of the class was Magic User because the book said it was. Don't try to lawyer it into being something else.

Name level was when they stopped giving you shiny new titles each level, and just started calling you "14th level cleric." It was 9 for every class except the halfling, who was capped at 8.

That's D&D. Name level in AD&D, the system that gave rise to 3.x and 4.0, had already split off from D&D by that time.

In AD&D, for Magic Users, it was 11th level when you gained the title "Wizard" Before that was Necromancer at 10th and Sorcerer at 9th.

Name level for fighters, on the other hand, was 9th IIRC and 10th for Thieves.
