Gearbox announced plans at PAX Australia to warp drive HD remakes of Homeworld 1 and 2 to Windows this year, following their recent acquisition of the franchise from THQ for $1.35 million. Direct ports of the original games will also be made available on unspecified digital distribution platforms for Windows.

Gearbox Software CCO Brian Martel expressed his fondness for the series in April after the purchase, stating his intent to make them "accessible on today's leading digital platforms" in a statement released by Gearbox.

Relic Games, creator of the Homeworld franchise, was sold to SEGA during the liquidation of THQ's assets and is currently working on Company of Heroes 2. Part of the Homeworld development team has since left the mother ship to begin work on a more grounded RTS, Hardware: Shipbreakers.

The same company that brought us Borderlands 2 but also gave us Colonial Marines. Seems like a crap shoot, but I'm hoping for the best.

Sign me up.

I recently re-played the original homeworld. The only thing it needs is a graphical update. I wouldn't mind them integrating Cataclysm's crew-experience system into the original, too.

(Cataclysm/Homeworld2 weren't nearly as good, but Homeworld2 was actually a step backward from cataclysm in many ways.)

Homeworld 2 lacked any gameplay improvements over the first one, and also lacked its brilliant story and soundtrack. The ship models were also bland and uninspired. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't spectacular. The original homeworld completely blew me away. Homeworld 2 did not.

Homeworld Cataclysm had some HUGE gameplay improvements over the first one. Accumulating experience for your units was a great addon. You had to balance protecting your more effective crews with making use of their improved capabilities. Unfortunately, unlike Homeworld 2 (which just lacked the brilliant originality of the first game), Cataclysm actually had a really really bad story.
