Quote:
When it launches next week, Disney’s ambitious new game Disney Infinity will include a Dropbox-like feature that lets users upload and download the game’s virtual worlds to all major consoles — and iPads.

Disney Interactive is billing the console/mobile cross-platform compatibility as the first of its kind for user-generated content in a game.

So, what is that content, exactly? Infinity’s killer feature is the “Toy Box,” an open arena where players have free rein to make anything they want by mixing and matching characters and items from Disney’s movies, TV shows and theme parks. At a press event in San Francisco on Tuesday, the company said that custom virtual worlds and even games made within the Toy Box can be uploaded for free to a cloud service, Disney ID, and then quickly downloaded to the Wii, Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or iPad.

The free iPad app, Disney Infinity: Toy Box, will not support the full game, which retails for $75 starting Aug. 18. But it will allow players to make new Toy Box worlds, edit existing worlds, and explore what they’ve made while controlling a Disney character.

The iPad companion app is Disney’s way of keeping Infinity front and center in kids’ minds whenever they’re away from the console and might otherwise be playing something else — like when they’re in the car or on vacation. During the press event, senior mobile producer Dan Lehrich used an iPad to make a new world in the Toy Box from scratch. After uploading it via Disney ID, he downloaded to an Xbox 360 an exact copy of that world, except with much better graphics, optimized for the console.

Why does the full Infinity game cost $75, when a chunk of it will be available for free on iPad? Although the main version of the game also features single-player story campaigns, the reason is that the console game is bundled with a “starter pack” of physical toys of characters. Those characters will appear in the game when the toys are placed on top of an accessory “base,” also included in the $75 bundle.

All app players get Mr. Incredible for free, and additional characters may be purchased inside the iPad app for 99 cents, but those app-purchased characters can’t travel to the console game. Additional physical toys of the characters can be purchased for $12.99, and their virtual counterparts can travel in both directions.

Grounding the “real” game in physical toys of the characters is an interesting move. By selling those bonus characters separately, Disney stands to build out a second revenue stream beyond sales of the game itself, and it may make it easier to bring characters from new or revived franchises into Infinity.

If the game is a success, it could turn around the fortunes of Disney Interactive, which has posted an operating loss in 18 out of 19 fiscal quarters since Q1 2009, when Disney began reporting it as its own segment for quarterly earnings reports.

In addition to the cross-platform play and the iPad app, which will be available “very soon, in the coming weeks,” Disney also announced yesterday that a second mobile app, Disney Infinity: Action!, would come to iOS devices on Thursday. The app overlays characters from Disney Infinity on top of real-world videos taken by users, and lets them share those videos via Facebook, YouTube or email. Android and Windows versions of the Action! app are planned for release “later,” probably within a month.

First came user content, up next, multiplayer!

My kids really want this game.
Come to think of it, I'm interested, too.
$75, though? And $12.99 for each additional character (admittedly they come with a cool collectible)?

I'm skeptical.

Anyway, what's not mentioned there, is all console versions come with Mr. Incredible, Captain Jack Sparrow, and James P. Sullivan.

I read a synopsis of this stuff from a dev preview, they basically said it was awesome. I'm a little concerned about the absolute cash grab with the characters/dlc/etc, we'll see what the true cost to play is. I'm betting it will be SO MUCH MONEY.

Don't worry. If this works, you'll see it as the model for the next X-Men game.

I think it's pretty much the model for the last one. See Marvel Heroes.

Until Blizzard, Disney, EA, etc., add the 6 people Riot employs they don't ...

They'll still be losing this battle.

Level editor? No. Try game building engine built in. This thing will be insane especially if user content is going to be accesdible across platfroms.

This game sounds pretty good. It does cost quite a bit of money to develop such a game and the replay value does sound high. At the same time I've heard some stories about kids not understanding the cost of purchasable content ingame which might lead to them having unreasonable expectations.

Yeah, I think kids not understanding the cost of purchasable content in game generally leads to parents having unrealistic credit card bills. Just ask my friend who had a momentary lapse, didn't disable networking on his tablet before handing it to his kid (as he normally does), and bought hundreds of dollars in "smurf-berries" in some in tablet app. Yeahhhh.....

I am betting that despite Ben's lack of desire to grind out the unlocks for the Toy Box, plenty of users will and their content will be worth the cost of the disc. I am remembering the early days of quake modding level and what they couldve made today.

Can we count this under possibly most misleading promo for a game ever?

"A brand-new game where all the Disney characters are available to everyone who plays it anytime."

From what I've read, only the characters you've purchased the toys for are available, and those characters are the only ones allowed to play through their respective worlds. So essentially the exact opposite of what that says. As well, you should watch the video if only for the hosts jumping on a giant "Infinity-mat" and being magically transported into some pre-recorded footage that has absolutely nothing to do with what they're doing. Couldn't you just... show a kid playing the game, maybe?

To be fair...their character "collectables" are very high quality and cost less than similar ones that have nothing to do with the game at the Disney Store. (or insert your favorite collectables at any comic book/toy store.) Still, that's a hell of a lot of money if you want to see all the content.

Post subject:  Re: Disney figured it out first!

So the starter pack is 75 bucks (game, 3 figures (monsters inc, pirates, Incredibles) and USB character reader).

Apparently, if you want to play co-op, you have to have 2 figures from the same world (since for some ridiculous reason characters cannot visit other playsets, only their own film), so to play co-op with the starters you have to get the sidekicks (or villains) pack - 30 bucks.

Then, to unlock the other playsets, you have to buy one figure (13 bucks) or a 2 pack (20 bucks) from that world - Cars, Lone Ranger.

So minimum, no co-op, you're looking at 101 bucks (pre-tax) to get to the 5 worlds currently in-game.

To do co-op in all 5, you're looking at almost 150 bucks (pre-tax).

Oh and this is before you get the power discs that apparently grant you powers in-game (5 dollars for 2 random, there are 20 in total in the first series).

Yeah, that's kind of an expensive game. Definitely designed specifically so you need at least one of every series if you want to unlock the things for the "toy-box" mode, which it looks like is the mode reviewers found the most enjoyable.

To get everything Disney is offering at launch it is 384$

For Skylanders it is 740$

My children offered to pay $25 each from their own accounts (they've been saving gifts for our upcoming trip and have about $125 each) for this game.

I went out and got the PS3 version (the network issue on the PS3 version was patched last night), and the $30 sidekicks pack so they could play together. They paid $50 between them, I paid the other $55. I need to sit down and really play it, but the game looks spectacular.

The thing is, I'm never going to spend on completing all the collections for them. The way I see this working out, they're going to play this nonstop for the next few months (whenever they're allowed to play, anyway.) When they appear to be getting bored, rather than get them a new game, I can spend $20 on a new world pack with two characters and get them another couple months of play.

Figurines as expansion packs?

Essentially, yes. Specifically, they are "World Packs." Each World Pack includes two figurines and a World Cube.

Right now, the game comes with 3 worlds plus the toybox. There are currently two "World Packs" available for purchase. The Cars worldpack comes with Holly Shiftwell and Lightning McQueen, as well as the World cube for Radiator Springs or whatever the Cars world is. The Lone Ranger world pack comes with The Lone Ranger, Tonto, and the World cube for their world. Apparently a Toy Story pack is coming out in October. Apparently they're looking at releasing new world packs every few months.

Snagged this over Christmas in a sale and haven't yet even put the disc in to try it. With the upcoming Marvel additions, I think it's time.

Aw, yay! Aladdin and Jasmin (and Stitch) are coming.

Gotta be honest, this thing still confuses me, and I've mucked around with it for an hour or so. Is there an actual game here? I'm tempted to just collect the figurines 'cause I like the art style.
