Extremely small team and an extremely ambitious project, let's hope they can deliver. The trailer is amazing. |

It might be interesting, yeah. I'll keep my eye on it. I've yet to see procedural generation really score a home run for me, yet, though. It's the kind of thing where it's getting better, so it might just be a matter of time. |

Same here, so far procedural has felt like "new planet, switches slightly flipped in this direction this time." Here's an interesting article about the problems (and how they're trying to resolve them for this game): http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/09/first-look-no-mans-sky/ |

Necrooooooo! This game is out now. I sunk 3 hours in last night after the midnight launch and found it quite addicting. The premise is basically, grab what you can in the place you're at, and use it to bootstrap yourself to the next place, wherever that may be. You discover things and get money for them. You can name them if you want. There is an optimal path to the center of the universe that you can take, but you can fly to any star/cluster you want to after leaving your starting planet. I named my starting planet after my dog. As you explore you come across ancient monoliths, language artifacts, etc., that appear to be from the "first" race which at the moment give me a Reaper type vibe from Mass Effect. Messages such as, "Galaxies lie at our FEET." and what not among a few others I've found. You also come across suit, weapon and ship upgrades. You collect materials on each planet to create these upgrades and continue on. These materials are also used for survival and travel. You need to refuel your ship, refuel your weapons, etc. with the elements you mine. There is a survival element of the game that I don't think most people expected. It is not as casual as it seemed, as you always have to replenish your shields, health, toxic levels and life support. The scale of the game when leave the first planet really smacks you in the face. You see a four planets around you in the distance, you manually fly over to one and enter the atmosphere to land. You explore for an hour. You leave the planet and realize it's got two moons you never saw because of your approach angle. You sigh audibly as you realize this cluster will take much longer than you expected. |

Story of the game has taken a bit of a turn and at the moment I am wondering if it's an eventual Spoiler: reveal or if I got red herring'd. |

In short, really bad framerate issues, bad control issues, and graphical glitches for a lot of people. Here's a video from Totalbiscuit about the situation: |

It ran worse on my gtx 660 "gaming" rig than it did on my PS4 so I am sticking with the console version. Didn't look much different anyway. |

Kaffis Mark V wrote: Wow, what's been going on with the PC launch? I haven't been following it. They didn't compile the game such that it could run on AMD Phenom chips which lack the SSE 4.1 instruction set. Lenas will bash my comp, but it played Witcher 3 at a great framerate on ultra settings (although I did lower shadows a setting or two). Plus it seems like they changed their requirements post launch to require Open GL 4.5 (this doesn't affect me), which I guess screwed over Intel graphics users who felt they had met the posted requirements? I might be conflating two things here. A couple other issues that have either been fixed or have workarounds for. Basically some big rookie mistakes. They contracted a QA team after their launch, which should say something. Reviews for it right now seem to hover around 7/10. |

Man, slow framerates or not, this is pretty fun. I probably shouldn't have bought this if I wanted to get stuff done around the house... |

Okay, so I found a *ahem* demo version of this game and have spent time with it. I like it enough to buy it, although not at full price due to the original insult. There seems to be a larger story they're only hinting at. Lore is everywhere if you care. The complaints about inventory management are legit for the first few hours, but you find a happy balance later on. I'm very much an explorer and always curious what's over the next hill. This game rewards that. I love the varied landscapes and it scratches the itch I've had since the first Mass Effect, just without the invisible walls to cut my exploration short. Ater spending 5-6 hours on a planet yesterday, I had to force myself to narrow my focus down to a few specific objectives, the last of which took me to the other side of the planet (a journey of a couple minutes) where there was the full realization I hadn't even scratched the surface of seeing the full planet. I left the planet with the realization I would probably never fully explore it even if given a year. I travelled to the space station saddened I'd never complete that planet. And then I saw 4-5 more planets in my system alone. Then I remembered how many jumps I'd have to make to get to the center of the universe. I've never felt so insignificant in a game. And I love it for that. |

So is the overwhelming criticism of the game itself (not just the PC port) legit or overblown? For example: |

RangerDave wrote: So is the overwhelming criticism of the game itself (not just the PC port) legit or overblown? This trailer? Overblown but with a couple good elements of truth to it. Yes, Sean Murray outright lied about a few things the trailer mentioned. If those happened to be your reason for buying the game, then the rage is justified. Space combat does seem kind of boring. There aren't differences in ships beyond how they look. Yes, factions are mostly meaningless in their current form. Inventory management is ridiculous early on, but I think that's more a testament to poor tutorial and not knowing what things you should carry early on (hint: it's not titanium, nickel, shielding plates, or power cells). The heart and soul of this game is exploration. I've been on the same planet for about 10 hours now. Not because I'm stuck, but because I keep finding cool crap (and making good money too!). I keep coming back to the comparison between this game and ME1. People loved or hated the Mako. I felt it embodied the pioneering theme of the game and I explored literally (and by literally, I don't mean figuratively) every planet getting every possible discovery off of them. If you hated driving around in the Mako, you're probably going to hate NMS. For some people, simply reaching the top of the hill to see what's beyond is it's own reward. I'm one of them. I agree with the "honest" trailer this game should not cost $60. The game is too simple for that price point. But I'd willingly pay $30 for it. Once it goes on sale, I will buy it and relinquish my *ahem* demo version. |

Over the course of development Sean made a ton of promises that were either cut or never implemented, which contributed to the hype. Apparently here's a list of things promised, put together by the internet:
ship classes with meaningful differentiation faction reputation with meaningful gameplay impact homogenous resource availability asteroid landings space station and fleet destruction large fleets traveling freighters large scale battles the player can join in-atmosphere battles NPCs outside trading posts and other docks ringed planets sand planets flying between stars (as opposed to warping via the Galactic interface) complex creature behaviour including environmental interaction rivers points of interest such as large structures and crashed freighters hacking locked doors radio chatter interaction with other players Here's a ridiculously gigantic post, as only the internet can create. https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/4y1h9i/wheres_the_no_mans_sky_we_were_sold_on_a_big_list/ |

A good portion of the things above are not things that would significantly impact what people think about the game. I think really only the things that relate to space battles hold much weight. |

The list of things that Sean lied about and people feel entitled to is all well and good, but the game is still fun with tons of room for expansion and improvement. People tend to overlook the fact that this game was developed by five programmers. It's fantastic for what it is, and many of things "missing" will likely be added in future updates. They just ran out of time. |

I agree, and I've been having fun with it. I think it helped that I really didn't follow much of the pre release hype, so I had no expectations. I was just trying to answer Rangerdaves question about why the internet is pissed. It looks like people are already doing some really impressive things with mods as well. |
