Link Quote: Fans of video game history may want to book flights to New Mexico. On April 26, a team of documentarians and garbage contractors will excavate the fabled landfill where E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Atari 2600 cartridges are said to have been buried three decades ago, and the public can attend the dig. The excavation is the basis for a documentary being produced by Fuel Entertainment, which secured the rights to dig up the landfill last year. Xbox Entertainment Studios, the Microsoft division that creates original programming for the Xbox brand, is also working on the project; the E.T. film will be the first in a series of documentaries from the group. Zak Penn, who worked as a writer on The Avengers and X-Men 2, will direct the documentary. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, a tie-in for the film of the same name, was released in 1982 on Atari 2600. Considered one of the worst games ever made, it failed to sell, and Atari allegedly buried the excess cartridges — reportedly millions of units — in the New Mexico desert. The excavation will take place in Alamogordo, N.M., from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET, at the Alamogordo Landfill. For more on the project, check out our interview from July with Fuel Entertainment. If I were in the area I would so go. |

Apparently this Fuel Entertainment is doing a documentary on the ET debacle and wants to show the world what's really out there. |

I played and beat that game on my Atarai 2600. It didn't make any sense to me as a kid. |

Thgat's because it didn't make any sense. It was a beta that was released just to release it. I played it too; it was terrible. |

In the game's defense though, most games released for Atari/Colecovision/Intellivision/etc. were pretty bad. For every Pitfall there were 10 Custer's Revenge. Lots of companies jumping on the money making craze and churning out as much as they could, as cheap as they could, as fast as they could. Most games I played were so simple they gave you 30 minutes of gameplay, at max. Here's one we owned called Frog Bog. The levels are not infinite, as both frogs permanently go to sleep once it hits night time. I will say that I did get a lot of gameplay out of Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack. That game taught my 5 year-old self how to play Poker, 7 card stud, 5 card draw, and especially blackjack. I learned the values of face cards, the hierarchy of those face cards, when to discard, when to draw, etc. |
