So I don't play anything much, but I've always liked the games where you start with jack and build up a civilization to conquer the whatever. Civilization, etc. Games like Command and Conquer, StarCraft, etc, where there's a progression component are good too, but not required.

Most games these days are focused heavily on multiplayer, and that's fine, but not really what I'm looking for. Maybe if it's turned based so I can play with the wife or kid, but I'm not looking to play on line.

Any suggestions for a newer game that fits the model?

Might I suggest Planetary Annihilation: http://store.steampowered.com/app/233250/

You can get it early now or on the actual launch Sept 5.

Quote:
"One of the most successful Kickstarter projects ever, Planetary Annihilation is an epic revival of the real-time strategy genre," the company said in a statement. "With a focus on massive scale and even more massive battles, Planetary Annihilation is an intense experience that lets players build armies across planets, fight in orbit, and annihilate each others' homeworlds with asteroids and, now, the Annihilaser."

Don't worry if you want to play alone. "Planetary Annihilation also includes a single-player experience called Galactic War that tasks players with conquering a dynamic galaxy by scouring the stars for technology and unique abilities."

I've been meaning to break out my beta copy of Planetary Annihilation.

Firaxis (current home of Sid Meier) has Civilization: Beyond Earth due for an October release. It looks pretty cool. I enjoyed both Civs IV and V plenty, and they both have excellent expansion support now. They've got different feels and focuses, though, so lots of people strongly prefer one over the other.

Check out some reviews and Let's Plays of some of the offerings from Paradox Interactive, too. They specialize in historical strategy games and tend towards the very complex with lots of moving pieces under the hood, so that's why I recommend some Let's Plays to figure out whether it's what you're looking for. They can also be really kind of open-ended and sandboxy, which is interesting. I lost about six weeks of my life to Crusader Kings II and don't regret one bit of it. That one in particular is a quirky game in which you play a dynasty instead of a single individual, so it's as much about making politically and genetically advantageous marriages as it is conquering territory. I started with a small Duchy in France and got my starting Duke's kid the throne of France, and a couple hundred years later I'd accumulated most of the Iberian Peninsula in the name of the Kingdom of France.

I've got the latest Europa Universalis sitting on Steam waiting for me to have a free weekend to orient myself in the game and figure out how things work in that Paradox game, which also comes highly recommended.

EVE.

There is no game with more meaningful empire-building.

Sins of a Solar Empire. It's a space-based RTS. The most recent expansion added a lot more depth to the game. The tutorials are a little bit light, but if you start on an easy difficulty setting, you can blunder your way to competent.

It's probably the closest I've come to Homeworld.
