So Elite dangerous is on sale till the 28th for 26 bucks (on steam). http://store.steampowered.com/app/359320/

Anyone playing this? Have tips for a total noob? I just got done with the tutorials, the dogfighting is pretty crazy, but I hear quite a bit of the game is exploration. Already building my spotify "space exploration" playlist.

I experimented with it briefly and might toy with it on and off. I liked the graphics, sound, the feel of the spaceflight and a lot of the mechanics, but it feels very much like a single-player game masquerading as an MMO and after a few days I had a lot of "what's the point?" going on. It lacks the competitive drive of EVE so I didn't feel any inclination to switch.

That said, I can see where it has potential for improvement and growth, so I would not say it's a bad game; it just didn't pull me in that much.

It definitely currently has the feel of "Space trucker: Milky way edition". The missions are all one-offs, there is no storyline, powerplay (a recently added feature) is a timesink joke, and the amount of time dedication to get into one of the larger ships is staggering.

However, like you said, I haven't found another game that makes me feel like Mal Reynolds/Han Solo better yet. Sneaking into a station in silent running mode with a cargo hold full of illegal weapons right under the feds noses makes me clench every time.

I'm hopeful the expansion will add some meatier content. They've definitely listed chained missions as a feature, as well as planetary landings.

I won't have anything but passing interest in this game if they don't eventually force people to play in full multiplayer. There is just no point in a space MMO where you can't ruin people's day involuntarily.
