That's the game that's stupidly hard just to be hard, isn't it? ;)

Can't say I agree totally with his review.

I guess the main thing to keep in mind when playing DS, is that you can't rambo anything. You run around with your shield up all the time or you're asking for trouble. You take your time going around corners, lest ye be ****, and you attack at range whenever given the chance.

The game hates you. If you find out that you can make enemies walk off a cliff, you do it. If you can find a way to get them stuck on geometry, you do it.

These things do not detract from the game. You just have to play with a certain, careful mindset. It's a gorgeous game with lots of depth and there's a reason it got PS3 RPG of the year from a lot of places. It's fun, I swear!

That's a pretty awesome review.

Yup. It's pretty much exactly what I thought of the game when I was watching a friend play it. If it's the PS3 rpg of the year, then the PS3 is even more worthless than I thought.

What's the point, then? I love Ramboing things.

Different sort of challenge. Variety is a good thing!

Pretty sure I just need to buckle down for a bit and get finances straight again, for I clearly need to get a PS3, Demon's Souls (that name is silly as Yahtzee says :(), and in a few months FF13.

Things I hate about Demon's Souls (a laundry list):

Cannot sell/convert-to-souls weapons

Upgrading stats/weapons gets stupidly expensive relatively quickly

Cannot pause game

Retarded weapon hit detection

Consumables are WAY too expensive

Farm farm farm farm farm items you need ad nauseum

New weapons/armor have virtually no requirement descriptors on them (I have a bastard sword I got in like the first level that STILL says I am too weak to wield at lvl 20, yet does not say when I can wield it with no penalty -- WTF?)

Only reason I have this game currently is because I got it free, and am already considering trading it in. It's not the fact that you lose all your souls upon death that bothers me (those can be gotten in great quantity in that Storm place opening level), it's the little things like those listed above that add up to repetative frustration.

Right now I've unlocked world 1-2 and the opening stage of each of the other areas, and there are still places in even 1-1 that I am not powerful enough to go to. I guess if you enjoy farming for long periods of time, you'll enjoy DS.

Areas are only locked due to world tendency, not locked due to how strong or not you are. In certain circumstances, you need to get a key elsewhere and come back, but you're never locked out due to strength. People have beaten this game at level 1 and done everything.

Items always tell you what is required to use them. You either aren't looking at the expanded description, or you don't know the stat symbols.

You aren't required to farm anything unless you want things you don't need.

If you want to powerlevel, there are plenty of ways to exploit souls by yourself and in very quick fashion.

The only way I can see this being possible is if the player spent weeks farming enough souls for arrows, herbs, and weapons/armor upgrades. Otherwise, you simply do not have the STR/HPs to survive that far in.

I've looked at every symbol and line in all of the item descriptions, and I have yet to find one that says what its requirement is. The instruction book was no help either.

I'd say healing herbs at the very least are needed. If I am missing some uber strat to finishing the game without them or soul farming, please let me know.

The only exploit I have found so far is getting the rolling skeles in the Storm entrance level caught on the rock outcropping just after the first archway. But for that you need arrows which cost souls (see above on farming).

EDIT:

A specific example:

In the very first level 1-1, there is a point when you reach the top rampart of the castle after going to the left facing the boss gate. It's the point where a guard at the top rolls a boulder at you down the steps, and behind him is a knight guarding a fog door, and behind you (coming up the stairs) is another guard, two crossbowmen, and a pikeman. Shortly past the pikeman and the last crossbowman is the transition into another rampart. On this rampart about halfway down is another knight. Except this knight hits like a Mack truck, and hardly takes any damage. I don't see how a key is needed to get beyond this point. I am lvl 21 with with +2 weapons and a +1 shield and cannot defeat him, while I can dispatch the rest of the castle with ease. Only way I can see getting beyond this point is by leveling your character and equipment.

I take it you're speaking of the red knight. Get the purple flame shield in 1-1 (the red dragon will be gone right now, since all worlds are pure white) and you'll be able to defeat him. The purple flame shield + a spear type weapon will breeze you through most enemies, because you can defend and attack at the same time.

Farming herbs isn't needed, either. I've only defeated three main demons (1-1, 1-2, 4-1), but I've got 70+ herbs just from running through levels.

Apparently the soul exploit has been patched.

Really, really, *really* hoping they make more games with this kind of engine/game mechanics.

Or, really, just learning to play enough to not get hit hehe. =)

No this knight was in the standard dark steel-colored armor. His attacks were just ungodly stronger than the other knights I have come across in the castle and it takes many more hits to kill him.

I got a ton, too, which were promptly used up in the first and second levels.

The problem is that this is easier said than done in this game. Especially when facing new enemies or rounding a corner and having a hidden enemy jump out at you.

I meant to say red-eyed knight, but I know exactly who you're talking about.
